New boat issue sorted now unsorted and sorted again and got her in the water!!
Submitted by Jackfrost80 on Fri, 2015-08-14 19:03
Just bought a boat today and parked it and trimmed the motor down in the drive but now the trim is dead. I can hear a click when I press the trim on the outboard but nothing.
Anyone know what may be wrong?

Yeah checked fuses. I have been stuffing around with 2 fishfinders going off that battery with the radio going for about 20 mins as well.
Does the trim require full charge?

Nup neither. When I picked it up the motor was trimmed halfway up and I did trim the motor all the way down to drain some water out. Is there some kind of protection that needs to be released?

Could be Relays
Theres 2 x relays, you need a good service manual for that motor mate!! mine went last week while on anchore, got the motor up to untangle some line from the prop to then not be able to get it back down, rang sea rescue and told them the problem, they had a machanic ring me and talk me through the manual release to get motor back down and home....830 at night, lucky i had a big flat head and multi grips in the boat.
Cleaned boat and motor down the next day and it was working again which is wierd, was told to replace both relays...about $15 each....havent done this as yet, mine is an 1995 johnson so has a black box at the back of the motor, both are located in there, take 2 minutes to change.

Managed to manually release it to get the motor up so it's towable. Guess I'll take it to All Boats tomorrow and see what the issue is... hopefully something cheap

How did you manually lift it
How did you manually lift it ? I presumed you would have to release the bleeder screw .. to release the pressure or is that for just coming down

Yeah there is a screw 'open' and 'close'. I opened it and the trim dropped down then I got the Mrs to tighten back up after I lifted it

Hi.
Is the pump 2 or 3 wire. I think most pumps are 2 wire blue and green wire. If you find the relay thats clicking you can apply an active 12volt to either the blue or green terminal. It may spark a bit but should go up on blue I think and down on green. If it works then either the relay is faulty, a fuse is blown or there is not enough voltage to the relay through a bad join somewhere or partially broken wire. If you bought it from a boat shop Id take it back and get them to sort it out.

Ok so after testing the blue
Ok so after testing the blue and green wires it appears that there is power going to the trim motor which means it is probably buggered. Pretty gutted that this would happen hours after I pick up my first boat.
I'm assuming I'd be covered under statutory warranty for that?

It's 5 years but I don't think it was the original owner that I bought it off through the yard which is how you tranfer warranty but another point is that it is not actually owned by me yet so they may be able to claim under the current owner. I'll explore all those options with the yard on Monday because they are decent blokes and I'd prefer to find an option that doesn't leave them out of pocket if i can help it even if it means me not getting the issue fixed straight away

Trim limit switch?
I had a similar issue with a df200 which turned out to be a trim limit switch on the front of the outboard that had moved. From memory it was like a plastic cam that was pretty easy to adjust once you knew. I'd give you some better directions except both the boat and owners manual are up at the yard at the moment sorting out a water in fuel problem that came up just in time for this weather....

Take it back to werte you brought it from
If you take it back to were you brought it from and they are half decent people I'm sure they will be most happy to fix it for you at no cost.
From what I have read above I don't think it is anything major.
Good luck with the new rig and happy fishing.

Suzis are pretty damn reliable, time proven and easy to fix.
By buying one youve given yourself the best chance of having a reliable longlasting boat.
But ANYTHING mechanical can break down-Im sure it'll be a simple fix.

Thats not so bad Jack.
When my old man bought his second boat, 19 foot Star Boat. The first trip the steering was arse about. On the second trip they picked up a drowned diver. So by the third trip he was ready to take it back. By all accounts it was a quick third trip and straight back onto the trailer. Had some great times on that boat in the end.

So what have challange marine said now
In all fairness if I've got the story straight it wasn't challenge marine who fixed the problem.
It was a "outboard mechanic" down the road that fixed the problem and challenge marine just paid the bill. Is that the guts of the episode.
What I think a lot of people on here would like to know is, what have challenge marine said to you about this and what is the name of the "outboard mechanic" down the road.
If you are going to entrust getting a repair done by some one on a boat it's akin to getting a plane repaired (IMO) I wasn't the bloody thing to work right every time I use it. I don't want to go to sea and find I can't use my motor.
Like wise pilots want their plane to not drop out of the sky.
In both cases people can end up dead.
I'm not out to name and shame challenge marine sound like they have looked after you very well and good karma to them, the "outboard mechanics" story to you as to why this has happened again, needs to be told. (IMO)

You are right Megalon, the guys at Challenge Marine have been and remain to be fantastic about the whole situation. It's not so much an 'outboard mechanic' but a local dealership for my brand of outboard that we both thought it'd be best to take it to for a quick and decisive diagnosis/fix.

Jack, while it is little
Jack, while it is little comfort right now you have a few things going for you and you will forget this part of the experience once you and your family are enjoying boating in coming years.
The things you have going right are that the dealership is taking all steps to sort out the issue (using the dealership of your brand motor would still be costing them money!) and it is winter after all.
So chin up, get it sorted properly not quickly and you'll be loving life in no time.

Turned out to be a faulty
Turned out to be a faulty wire between the trim and outboard where the previous owner had (for whatever reason) cut and rejoined the wires and obviously used the wrong type of shrink wrap and also nicked the sheath of the wires. New wires in, trim works and the weather Sunday is looking great for a Father's Day river bash... happy days
