New boat

 Hi guys,

My name is Phil Macintosh.

Long time reader and have just signed up to be more involved with this awesome forum.

My first post is to do with buying a new boat... From china.

A mate has had one for 6 years now and absolutely loves it and hasn't had a problem.

But I'm not so sure. Has anybody had any experience or knowledge on boats coming from china?

And wether or not to buy the motor from aus or from over seas?

Lookng at a max 24ft.

Thanks in advance,

PhilMac

They make everything in china

They make everything in china these days, neither is it all good, nor all bad. Might pay to narrow your questions down to specific boat brands and models people may have experience with.

Trailcraft

Trailcraft are being made in China now, I believe the first should be on sale here now and at a pretty good price. Not good for those of us who already have one but I reckon the chinese will probably do at least as good a job as local-sign of the times.

Would not buy a boat from

Would not buy a boat from China, a tee shirt a pair of Crocs a Hat Yes! to wear in my Aus made tub. Support local manufactures, if not say goodbye to your kids jobs and the future of our boat fabrication industry. I could go on and on about the reasons not to buy from China, but I guess with Australia day coming up next week we should all think of why this is ''The Lucky Country" (For Now!)

hi mate
couple of pros and cons from what i have seen

Firstly any boat you are looking at ask about the construction method and photos of the process -also ask who is the designer - if they cant provide these then they are simply cranking boats out of moulds and have no idea about boat building!
You will find however that most can provide the above -and usually very quickly and politely!

Pros
cheap (obviously)
can be customised to suit usually at no cost (their standard bowrail designs are shocking!)

Cons
*well this is a pro and con - they few i have seen tend to be laid up quite thick - this makes the boat strong but heavy - it also means they dont know enough about engineering so to be safe they lay them up a bit thicker! -
*Inconsistency in the layup thickness - you can often tell this by walking along the side of the boat and thumping it with your fist -some parts are solid others not as thick (rather than not thick enough)
*stainless used -make sure its 306 - otherwise it will constantly have rust sopts on it -and its a little thin
*wooden stringers - if they have them what sort of wood is it?? (is it wood?!!!)
*resale - i cant imagine it being good -but then if the purchase price is a lot lower then it may not matter

not trying to put you off at all just letting you know my 2 bobs worth!! -i have seen 3 different brands and they were all "good" boats - just not for everyone

cheers
