Swim baits. Any1 doing it over here??
Submitted by Chris fish on Wed, 2012-01-18 21:22
Hi guys just looking into swim baits and how effective it would be over here. I've read a lot about it from sealine and seems like a good idea just not sure on if it's worth trying or just sticking to the usual whole fish baits. ATM I have some 50-60cm whole sambos as baits but I assume a live bait would get a lot more attention. Any thoughts would be helpful.
Cheers Chris

I'd assume live baits would
I'd assume live baits would be better because you dont get the pickers that you do with dead bait, and with a 50cm sambo you know its gonna be big!
Good luck
(But dont sambos have a min size of 60cm?)

Yeah mate - wouldnt go
Yeah mate - wouldnt go advertising that you are planning to use undersized sambos as bait.
Apart from being illegal, keeping one at that size rather than letting them grow to something worth fighting is just a shit thing to do.
When asked by a non-fisherman 'how many fishing rods do you really need?' the correct answer is either:
n+1 (where n is the number of fishing rods you currently own); or
n-1 (where n is the number of fishing rods which would cause your significant other to dump you.

Hi Chris,I am thinking of
Hi Chris,
I am thinking of using swim baits as well. The only problem with that is , that u need a big empty sandy beach. If u have reef the fish can bust u off and other rods are no good either. So that leaves not much left in metro area. But in general i think that can get u some good fish!
And to other comments (not size related), I think ANY local fish will get eaten by something. And the bigger the bait, the bigger the fish. Nothing in the foodchain goes untouched!!!! And if u put out a hole 10kg sambo somthing will eat it!!!!!!! Or what do u think the ppl at the barges are complainig about? And for some ppl it is a sport to catch and release a big shark!
Cheers Seb

Sorry guys I'm not keeping
Sorry guys I'm not keeping undersized fish just couldn't remember what the size on the guide was, lol I just measure to where it says Samson fish not looking at the numbers as its not what I usually target, the ones I kept where just over the size limit. Thanks seb I just upgraded my gear again and with all the small bronzies around was just thinking that it would be the next step up. I know of a few beaches down south that would be worth swimbaiting with over 20ks if just surf beach, looks like that's where I'll be going at Easter for the salmon run. With so much reef around the metro ill prob just stick to the usual methods for big baits.

I reckon south or north from
I reckon south or north from here there are some good beaches for that kind of fishing. I'm also looking for one in short driving distance. And i think you r right a nice bait in the 20-30 kg mark should bring in something nice.
What gear are u using?
I am using for big bait tiagra 50wlrs. But i wanne put braid backing on to get more line for kayak baiting.

I've been getting hammered
I've been getting hammered by bronzies up to 1m so I've been tempted to go and put 1 back out with a set of hooks but just not sure if the population of big stuff over here is as good as SA, I live in 2 rocks so there is way to much reef up here but somewhere like mandurah surf beaches looks like it would be good for a swimmer.
Jesus that is a bit heavier than what I got that's for sure, I've just upgraded to a torium 50 with 1100m of 55lb braid backing with about 200m 50lb mono topshot. I was with brenz last weekend when you where on the side of the road and would defiantly be keen on catching up for a fish with other guys that target the big stuff wheneva you are going.

Ah ok, now i know who u are.
Ah ok, now i know who u are. U got more line on your torium then i have on my tiagra. And i was thinking the same with the lil bronzi or a nice ray! Trigg or scarb would be ok in winter when there are no swimmers around. But in summer its so busy....
And sounds like a good idea , next time we go with brenz u should come along mate....
