My Big Koks produces MARLIN
Yes, Yes, Iam Back.
Like a Bear coming out of hibernation.
Well here is the story.
Got the phone call from my mate in Carnarvon ( The Long Haul ), GP you need to come to Carnarvon the weather for Friday 2/11 to Sunday 4/11 is looking fantastic and we are heading to your favourite spot Koks Island. Big sigh, dropped my head, I was in Mullewa and heading back to Perth so no chance of getting there however wished him luck and told him to catch a BIG ONE for me and to give me a call on Sunday night.
All Sunday afternoon I waited for the phone call to come as if waiting for the call from Whitey to tell me he had a spare spot on board after the fishing ban.
At 7.30pm the phone rang with some mad man yelling and screaming words I could only believe to be bullshit.
GP, BIG FISH, BIG FISH, THE BIGGEST FISH, You should have been here, BIG FISH, MAAAAAARRRRRRLLLLLLIIIIIINNNNNN.
Okay calm down, what happened.
"We went to your favourite spot", yeah, "I put the spoon lure out as we saw some tuna and hoping to catch one or a mackie", yeah, "On my shitty $40 rod and $100 reel", yeah, "About five minutes later the reel screams off, Alan grabs the rod", yeah, "This BIG FISH jumps out of the water". What Was it, What Was it I yelled down the phone, "GP A MARLIN, A F#@*N MARLIN.
BULLSHIT!!!!, NO WAY, YOUR KIDDING, BLOODY HELL, Well done Grayz, tell me more.
The fight lasted for 3 to 4 hours. They had it within 2 to 3m of the boat about four times. With two on board they roted the rod when the other was stuffed. They called Carnarvon Sea and Resue for advice & help, it finally broke off near the boat, the fish swam off with the cheap arse spoon lure wrapped around it's bill. If anyone catches that Marlin, Grayz would like that lure back.
Size: about 12 to 14 Feet Long without the bill length, Weight No idea but someone could tell us what they estimate. Photo on his mobile phone so not sure of quality.
He thanked me for doing a great job tying his knots last time we met, he hadn't re rigged since then. At that point I hung up. Whitey why didn't you Call ?????
Cheers

Radio
Was on radio duty with Carnarvon sea rescue when the fight was on, not able to offer any help without seeing what was going on. Magic listening in on the conversations between them and Darren in Reel affair [I think is his boats name] and other boats nearby.
When they logged off on returning they sounded gutted, a monster fish so close and yet so far.

He he. Funny stuff. If I had
He he. Funny stuff.
If I had a Marlin on the end of the line the only way you'd be getting the rod out of my hands is if you hit me with the priest first. Must be a serious adrenalin rush.

Great story, ohh great hybernating canine, about time for you to reawake, put on your lucky sombrero, dust off the rods&reels and mark some good fishing dates in your flash agenda, to catch them bigguns!

That's a big fish
Using the attached table a fish of that size is over the 1000lb mark. A fine effort on a $40 rod and $100 reel.

Wow
Just looked at the chart Alan, they are not going to believe it.
They said it was BIG, but I don't think they new it was going to be that BIG.
Carnarvonite they were disappointed because they didn't get any good photos however I said to them they had a chance to experience something that others chase a lifetime.
Bring on the Fishwrecked Comp

Great Call Quobba
I was so excited for them and I wasn't even there.
The boys on this site know what I am like when Iam on, Shouts like I'AM ON, I'AM ON, OOOHHH GOOOD FISH, replies like Shut the F up or Yeah Yeah We Know, lol.
When it was all over I would have just rolled over on the floor and had that cigarette, with a Sly Grin.
Do you know the boat?? Long haul, Do you fish Carnarfin??

Yep mate- have seen her about a few times.. Nah, I usually leave town for the fin- cant stomach lining up 7 deep at the ramp every day or fighting for a spot at redciff overnight!
Also too many clowns with radar out there on that week, prefer my good spots to remain that way!

Spot On Quobba
Got invited to go in it for the last two days as the boys were having difficulty catching fish.
Doing some very basic things wrong, like not trolling when moving from spot to spot, tying braid straight to swivels or hooks, not using Fluro Carbon leaders, bad knots etc.
Soughted all that out and we finished with some good snapper, spanish mackeral, tea leaf trevally, bust offs and one or three beers at the end.
Have been invited to compete for the whole week next year but like you said it is very hard going, not like the Fishwrecked Comp.

what was the rod, reel and line strength?

If it is the
reel Iam thinking of Alan, it's 24kg mono with a plait tied to a 130lb wind on leader.
His other reels, he has are 50lb braid with a bimini twist tied to an 100lb fluro carbon leader with an improved albright Knot.
I have started using the under over knot when joining to terminal tackle and the FG Knot when joining braid to mono.
Work a treat, have not had one fail.
