List your Dangerous fish in WA

Hi Crew,

Quan just sent me a PM with a great idea for a forum thread, so I thought I'd put it up and see where it went. The idea is to post up any pictures or info you have on fish in Western Australia, even Australia for that matter which could be considered as dangerous, painful or something to note when handling/filleting a certain fish.

One example is Coral Trout, the top dorsal spines carry a toxin that infects the area under the skin and causes it to puss up and be rather uncomfortable for a few days.  (the other spikes may have it as well, but I've only experienced the top dorsal spike) Generally when you spike yourself its on the fingers or under the finger nails and can cause a lot of discomfort when fishing a few days in a row and something touches it. (Much more painful than your typical niks and cuts)

Cheers,

Adam

My most painful experience

Fri, 2008-09-12 14:00

Came from a cobbler I caught at Mindarie one night. The worst thing was I had just got through explaining to my daughter how dangerous their spines were. I don't know what was more painful, the sting or looking like an idiot in front of my daughter,

Barracuda

Fri, 2008-09-12 14:19

mate of mine lost a finger tip years ago when the bonnet of a Plymouth Barracuda slipped. Thats true too - might have been Studebaker but doesn't work as well. Stonefish perhaps - i remember a schoolmate of my brother stood on one at Pretty Pool in Hedland - no lasting damage but he was in so much pain for hours even after treatment.

Ones to Watch

Fri, 2008-09-12 15:46

The usual ones ,cobbler, catfish, stingrays etc--have been got by small stingray through thumb and in foot by cobbler ,thank heavens for piss [not canned type] and hot hot water.
The others
1 - Red snapper--extra sharp gill plates
2 -Carpet sharks --only one that can bite beyond its own tail and "play dead" on the deck for ages only to snap at whatever comes near.
3 -the usual sharks/macks with lots of teeth
4 - gurnards, lionfish stonefish ,flatheads as well as the boar fish for the painful spines.
5 - and two for the pot pullers -crayfish poisoning from the scratches one receives from handling them without gloves and the numbfish--you do not see many of these but if you have had a boot off one you will remember what they look like for life
The rest most fishers like us are aware of or should be

fish that hurt

Fri, 2008-09-12 16:11

Worked on the trawlers for a while. When we used to sort the catch we would wear a pair of woolen gloves and a pair of rubber gloves over the top of that, to stop getting spiked.

I remember on my first trip ....and in the first hour ...i got spiked by a small catfish only about 5cm long. It was only 5 mis later..i started to feel pasty and sweating like a whore at church..after an hour i came around after the toxins were passing through my body.

After that i was shitting myself..as the boys were rattling of list of fish that will kill you and cause you greif. They grabbed a stonefish one day and pushed a pastic bag down on top of it and showed me the poison squirt out,,it was heaps....and made me repect them big time.

Later in the trip one of the boys got spiked by a bullrouter..and ive never seen someone in so much pain..so thats one to look out for. Also on another trip we had a small bag of prawns fall on a deckie..the poor bugger..didnt get hurt by the weight..but was cook as a dog from the 100 or so prawn spikes in his body..he had to go to hostpital for a week.

Anyway with my experiance with everything in the ocean,,if it has a spike it will hurt..its just how much..you will just find out, in a matter of time!

Easily the most dangerous

Fri, 2008-09-12 19:55

Easily the most dangerous fish I have to contend with is the Barramundi, it has a most toxic effect on my marriage, going away for days or sometimes weeks on end while the grass grows and no one to take out the rubbish. Does anyone know of any cures for this envenomation as I'm certainly noy interested in prevention :-P

First Aid

Hi, after reading some of the comments I would not mind and insurance cover on some of you, as most marine creatures have a high protine sting, cobbler, stink rays ,happy moments ect hot water will give almost immediate reliefe from the sting and painand also relieve the swelling, place the affected area in as hot water as can be applied without scalding the skin ,this will ;A help bleeding,(cleans the wound) B;reducees the swelling,(I have seen a persons hand after a stingray spine got him swell to 4 times its normal and you would think the skin would burst) start to go back to its normal size,  C; the hat water reducecs the protine in the poision, Hot water in general terms will aid anyone stung by a fish and as long as it does not cuase burning to the skin it wont hurt, allways see a Doctor in case of infection any way as the intugment (fish skin) or the spine itselfe may have all sorts a crape on it so its best to get it cleaned up,

For ost other cases, particularly if I go North,i wallways takea bottle of Chloro hexidine glutonate,it is hospital grade cleaning solution and is about all that will kill coral polyps and fish infected hands and fingers  type skin sores hope this helps, best way is dont get stung? Cobbler and Electric Eels

Sat, 2008-09-13 09:44

I used to surf almost from dawn to dusk and I can't remember now how many times I have stood on a cobbler. It must have been at least 4 times if not more. Those bastards really make you ill and the longer it takes to get treatment the worse it gets.

The deckies will know how painfull those friggin electric eels can be when the craypot hits the tipper and you just happen to be leaning on it!!!! Yell

cobbler

Sun, 2008-09-14 04:43

not my experience thankfully but i have seen grown men cry from cobbler stings.

I have memory of a fisherman in Peaceful Bay getting the full barb down his thumbnail and being taken to the doctor who then stuck a pain killing needle into the barb hole down the length of the thumbnail.  Sometimes there's just no choice...

For Mitch

Sun, 2008-09-14 18:02

Yes Mitch,it is pronounced,Chlorohxadin, glutonate,(my spelling is S:::) and can be bought from the chemist, comes in a plastic bottle,around$15.00 and is recomended by

the Royal QAustralian navy in a book titeld Diving,& Subaqatic medicine,it is as I said, hospital strenght, anti septic, and you dilute it in a water,it is the only stuff that is known to kill coral polyps if a person gets cut/scratched,what happense is the polyps being a living agent can keep growing(Festuring) in the wound and that is the problem, but as it is an anti septic ,use it in any other wounds,I suggest you also carry Betadine, also from chemist both in gell or liquid form, keeps the wound clean also, and great aid in stopping infection, the old stop gape if it is a good open wound is ,catch a fly,get it to lay its eggs,(magots) in the wound they will only eat dead tissue,so they keep the wound clean, trick is finding and catching a preganent flyLaughing?

Bloody Coral

Mon, 2008-09-15 08:12

I was washed off my feet on a reef at Cape Keraudren nearly 40 years ago - bad coral cuts to the right hand and knee. It is only in the last few years the scars on my handed faded and they ceased becoming inflamed every few months.

Bloody right

Thu, 2008-09-18 19:54

Yes 7739 Ian,As I said, the polyps are a living creature, andone of the problems you get is that they can and as you found,do,keep on going, but in all honesty, and I swear by it from personal use both in recieving ant administering,Chlro Hexidan Glutomate, about the only think I know of that works, but it a fastastic medi kit item and will also do the world of good for those fish cuts ,skratches ,and nics we all get,the only real down side to using it,no sting,I like my patients to remember the occassion,I'm a good hand with a needle and thread too,not neat just goodTongue outjersey

more pricks than a dart board.

Mon, 2008-09-22 11:31

In my youth when in the Canaries I swam out to reef barrier across a bay. Was so glad to climb on it I took no precautions & a sea urchins spines broke off on the inside of my foot. Bloody painful! It took months to get rid of them & years for the dye from them to fade away.
Dont know if you have them in WA?

I`d rather be fishin`!!!

Minor I know, but I got a jab from a little flattie a couple of weeks ago and it hurt like a bastard. It felt like my hand had been put into a bucket of hot water. This was only just a quick jab so I shudder to think how bad something like a spike from a Gurnard, Happy Moments etc might feel like.

Sea Urchins

Mon, 2008-09-22 17:53

Hi Rainbow,Yes the spine from the sea urchine is a sweet heart, the problem is with the ones we get here abouts (mouve in colure) and spiny as all hell is that the spines are segmented,by this if you get a spine and try to pull it out it breaks at the next section, and  so on I have had a couple over the years and agree they are a pain, bet I found was to let it get pusy (festure) and get it out with the crap, better still, try not to get spinned,by the way,our New Zealand brothers,(stat u bro) call them kinnas and love eating the inside row,its not bad,but a nice steak is better.Winkjersey
