Went to Mandurah before work

Wed, 2015-12-23 10:03

Went to Mandurah before work anyway

Lot of undersized still around but managed to get my 10 in just over an hour scooping and into work back in Canningvale before 7:30am

Was soured though when I got back to my car.

A family had pulled up and in a friendly manner I asked if they were going scooping, the Father already shot off to get in the water and spoke to his wife.

I asked if they had a gauge and showed her mine and she said no and didn't realise they need to be a certain size.

I advised you cannot take undersized crabs and to do so could result in big fines but she just walked off to the water anyway

Grabbed the rego and called Fishwatch to hopefully keep an eye out but without witnessing them taking undersized i'm not sure if Fisheries will or have turned up to check them out

These areas in Mandurah just seem to be a hotspot for people pillaging undersized - did witness this last year on numerous occasions especially at night and called them in, that's all you can do

Sadly it's an all together to common sight

Wed, 2015-12-23 23:06

I know how you feel, bloody frustrated, to see so many times people who I'm sure know what the rules are as far as catching crabs go, but don't give a damn and when asked about it play dumb (and quite look the part as well).

Or just plain arrogant with the I don't give a damn attitude and what are you going to do about it any way. They know that Fisheries aren't going to show up inside an hour or so and they will be long gone by then.

Nicely done Unc, I haven't had a good feed of crabs in years. I miss them and rate them over crays.

Re Undersize Catches

Fri, 2015-12-25 09:06

Whilst there's many areas around the Estuary Foo-Fung and his rellos scoop to crush in their soup, a plain clothed officer could just about patrol permanently along the Coodanup/Nairns Reserve and bust them all day, same with Erskine/Miami.

Fines alone should cover the cost of wages etc.

Just think'n... one thing I've noticed along these areas is there's no signs (in multiple languages) advising the min requirments and penalties etc. Can't just assume everyone knows the rules, don't need a licence to buy a scoop, or get any info with it.

By saying "foo fung and his rellos", you're implying that undersize crabs are mainly harvested by Asians?

I, amongst a few other FW members are Asians and I know most of us abide by the rules and regulations.  Yes, there are a few Asians that need to be educated, but the majority behave.. lol

I have educated a few fellow "Asian" boaters and fishos about legal sizes and limits, hopefully with success!

For what its worth, I do not EVER keep "just size" fish or crabs. Although legal size for crabs are 127mm, no crabs are taken home if they're below 130mm.  Same goes for legal sizes of fish..

Good idea regarding signs in multiple languages.  Yes, immigrants should try their best to learn English when they settle in Australia. But we still need signs and information in different languages, to cater for our multicultural society..

Anyway, its Christmas and I dont want to get involved in politics.. or verbal sparring on a keyboard..

Sorry for an offence Ashen,

Fri, 2015-12-25 19:20

Sorry for an offence Ashen, wasn't intended as racist or all tared with the same brush etc, I have friends & clients of all nationalities. foo fung was simply a way to suggest where I was coming from.

Whilst I've seen many bogans etc taking just undersized, I've only ever seen asians taking babies, i.e. ~50mm (even less), appartently mushed up including soft shell into a soup. I'm not aware of any other nationality that does this kind of soup.

Like you, for me unless there well over 130mm I throw-em back, too fussy to get all the meat outa them otherwise. I also never keep females.

 There's nothing racist in

Mon, 2015-12-28 09:48

There's nothing racist in those comments.

its well known that the Asian community live their seafood, and unfortunately are the most common offenders of breaking fishing regulations, especially when it comes to crabbing and shore based fishing. Yes like yourself I'm sure there are many Asian people who abide by the rules, but it's all too common that the offenders are seen.

everytime I go get crabs I see groups of Asian people who drag nets pillaging the waters, taking everything inluding small bream, small crabs the lot. I am sorry but I am no racist but I am sick of seeing this. And yes I've reported it many times.

these waters a couple years ago were full of crabs, prawns, loads of bream, whiting, cobbler you name it. Even sea horse live there. Now it's almost a baron waste land... It's bloody sad that this is what Australian marine conservation has come to.

I will re-iterate, I am no racist nor is this intended in being racist, but I don't think I've seen any other nationality doing this down there. I've spoken to them many times, and the most common response you get is 'I speak no english'

and on another note the drag mets they use are illegal with the type of fine mesh drag nets which are no longer allowed, but again they didn't care

Fri, 2015-12-25 10:26

i came across a group of vietnamese fishing and crabbing on the swan river foreshore last week, i saw them catching undersize bream, they made a big show of throwing one back when they saw me....

i phoned fisheries and they were in the area, and 'visited' them, but the crabbing guys were still in the water scopping when fisheries arrived, i could see the scoopers quickly re-sorting their catch before they came to shore :-)

Fri, 2015-12-25 19:26

I frustratingly see this quick sort or tip the bucket often.

Be much better success and deterent if the fisheries guys wore plain clothes, drove unmarked vehicles, blend in with their own scoops, suprise bust them in the act, all they gotta do is show their badge.

 Anyone found breaking rules

Fri, 2015-12-25 19:49

Anyone found breaking rules and regulations should be dealt with stiff fines, regardless of nationality.

A few times I've asked fellow asians to put back undersize bream.

There was a time my family was having a picnic at Pickering Park in Bassendean.  I saw a group of Vietnamese fishing.  As they were leaving, they left behind a couple of homemade rods (bamboo sticks).  I ran after them and said:

"hey guys, you forgot your rods".

Their reply was "dont worry about them, just leave them there".

I replied nicely "can you please remove your shit??".

Their reply "nah, we dont need them anymore".

By this time I totally lost my cool and said "Remove your fking shit before some young kids hurt themselves on the fken hooks!!!!".  Funny enough they gathered the bamboo sticks, broke them up and properly binned them.

I am not pretending to be a fisheries officer, but I do want my daughter (and other young kids) to have fish to catch in future, aswell as clean parks to enjoy.

Anyway, back to my scotch!! Lol
