Interesting capture off Karratha

Got a text from a mate a couple of nights ago to say that his younger brothers mate had captured an 86cm Red Bass from back beach in Karratha. I must admit, I was extremely sceptical about the claim and thought maybe they'd confused it with a monster mangrove jack but low and behold, I got sent a couple of photos which supported the story. A rare capture up here I would say, and especially landbased on 10lb line. Besides Exmouth and Ningaloo the only places I've seen them regularly encountered around here are the Monte Bello Islands and way offshore at Glomar Shoals. The whole time I've GT fished and dived Karratha/Dampier I've never come across one.

Fight

They would have had a real battle on their hand bringing it in. They are bloody hard work getting them to a boat let alone when you're on shore.

I've got them off Glomar, just out behind the islands through to Bedout island north of Hedland and down as far as Gnaraloo on the west coast. One of the blokes on the boats we worked up there was a specialist at them and chinamen, all on handlines,  one in four fish on average would be a chinaman or red bass,--------------- I used to try to fish as far away as possible from him in case it was a disease that I didn't want to catch!!!

skepical until i see the pics, surely a big arse MJ, no way would a red bass come into a muddy, tidal place like the back beach, never seen one off damps in the 14 years i've fished off Karratha and Dampier.

I'm a skeptic also untill I see a pic but I know Karratha has turned up some strange fish over the years from killer whales to pink snapper great whites and sambos. I once saw a dolphin fish beach it's self in onslow so I guess anything is possible.

Its fully true, Picture_Perfect caught it - either on a popper or with some live bait from his set net.
