illegal Cray fishing

have heard that this morning the fisheries inspected a boat coming back into geraldton after he had been out getting crays.

He had his boat limit "12"

But they searched the boat and found an additional 25 crayfish onboard.
apparently they searched his house also, finding under size crays and equipment for illegal selling of crayfish.

He then had his $100,000 razorline confiscated.

Personally i hope they can sell his boat to someone for $1,000 then fine him $99,000 for the crayfish ontop.

dirty dog....

No doubt this wouldnt be the only case going around during cray season.

Cray Fishing

Unbelievable some people, I'm sure they make him pay for it.

Was speaking to a mate last week, him and another mate went out diving for crays. Both had licenses, but only one dived for them, he got 12 thinking he was within their rights/limits. But fisheries made him return 6 into the drink, stating they weren't allowed to take 12 as only 1 person contributed to catching them (fair enought i pose). Their were told that if they kept a 2nd pair of goggles/fins onboard, they would of been fine?? Interesting..

What a complete moron !!!! this type of behaviour only encourages stronger and tougher rules for the people doing the right thing.

Each person has a limit of 6 - you cant catch more and farm off whats over your limit to others, license or not. I know it happens, but technically you cant do that.

Hi Ya, Agree Huggy, that is

Hi Ya,

Agree Huggy, that is the technically correct answer.

But Fozz, if there was a second set of fins and goggles on board, Fisheries are going to have a really difficult time proving that the second set wasn't used by anyone hence the comment I'd suggest.  (Provied of course that the second peson has a license).

One could take that a step further and say that the only set on board was shared but the guys in the boat would have a difficult time proving that.  I suppose they could argue that while one diver was in the water the other stayed on the boat as a safety measure but still much harder to prove.

Cheers.

Your spot on HuggyB, but the way it was put them, i.e if you take your 80yr grandmother out and she got a license, providing theres a 2nd set of snorkelling gear in the boat, your home and hose?? Neither your really still farming them off.

Good to see them take his boat. They should fine him bigtime, and if he is unable to pay the fine within a week sell the boat.I think a fine of 30-40 k would teach him .

And auction it off with the proceeds going to Fisheries who need all the funds they can get.

Bloody oath Fisheries need all the funds they can get.

I'm not sure how many people are aware that the fish size ruler stickers are'nt being produced anymore.

What a shame.

No Stickers!

Wed, 2008-12-10 05:03

That's going to add to the confusion when the new pink snapper bag and size limits go into effect Jan 1, as well as the new Cat 1 individual and boat limits.

Seems like every day I hear about people abusing the regulations regarding crays, crabs, abalone etc, and with the apparent diminishing of fisheries' presence (and stickers) it's only going to get worse.

But a lot of it stems from the fact that WA seafood is only available to WA people at an exorbitant price. The crays you see in Woolies, for example, are weedy little things that are probably from last season and frozen for five months. All the good stuff goes overseas. This lack of affordable, locally caught seafood is certainly no excuse for fishers to do the wrong thing, but it goes a long way towards explaining the mindset of some people.

Mind you, someone with a $100k boat can probably afford top of the line seafood so what's HIS excuse, other than being a d#ckhead?

There's about 4 people in that little fishing town we go to that we'd love to see get caught, yes thats why we the honest amateur has to pay with shortened bag limits for crays and fish.  Hope the ar.....le looses everything.  Just leave him standing in his underpants.

wow didnt konw that about the ruler stickers.... thats pretty tight.

They carry on about people not knowing the rules and regulations for recreational fishing, but now they are removing some of the tools people use as guides on what they can and cant take...

All for a 20 cent sticker!!

and even now you notice on alot of the major bridges and jetty's (Mandurah and palm beach) just to mention a couple, dont have the fish ruler bolted onto the jetty anymore either!

Yes Bodie agree about stickers

Wed, 2008-12-10 10:11

Bob replaced his old one last year, mate made a lovely aluminiun base, stuck it on, can't warp/shrink etc, as they do shrink, we measured the old one and it was out, especially for legal size dhuie.

Can't believe Fisheries is doing this,  the only thing I can think of is like the cray gauge, I asked a fishers bloke why they don't sale them and he said because they wear and if you gauge a cray and its worn (amatuer size), then they put the vernier gauge (and you know where they measure from) on and they are undersize yet the cray gauge says legal for amateurs, fisheries have no leg to stand for fining you, maybe the same for the fish sticker. I could be wrong?

Stickers

Wed, 2008-12-10 17:30

I also noticed the measurements for the new stickers were wrong and the further down the sticker you went the bigger the error....... the wrong way, in that if you went by the sticker you could be done although it would be a arsehole fisheries officer if he pingged you cos the sticker was wrong.....and nine had'nt shrunk it was new

"this is a guide only" - so no excuses really.

You really need to invest in a more reliable fish measuring device - or just catch bigger fish that you dont need to measure Tongue out
