How do you justify your fishing budget??

Mine is simple. I used to race rally cars and the cost per rally was about $1000+, and at 6-7 per year it adds up.

Now I dont, and its very easy to say that whatever I get is cheaper than a set of tyres etc etc. No arguments then.

I'm 19, single, and its better than drugs. Sometimes I spend a couple of hundred a week on fishing gear and my friends will spend a $300 clubbing on friday and another $300 on saturday and moan about how much money they've wasted.

If ever I will get one. You also dont moan about the hangovers either. Just watch those girls, because once you meet the right one, the cost of the RING will be at least 4 Stella's, and a couple of Tiagra 130s to boot.

I do few cash jobs on the side separate to my normal work, that finances my toys normally. Plus I keep all my scrap copper, that all adds up.

My Mrs is pretty good, I work hard, she doesn't mind too much.  I've seemed to narrow my hobbies down to one now and thats fishing.  Before I had a lot of things on the go and being me I needed the best gear for each hobbie.

I haven't given my wife access to Netbank... She is oblivious to the cost of my toys.

I work - she stays home with the kids...

Cost is one thing though - my challenge at the moment is keeping her out of the room I have assigned to my gear.

Yes I am one off the lucky ones

The Mrs is more of a fanatic than I am. She just emailed saying fishing this arvo???

But she will fish with an old boot and I like the better gear. Up to recently better gear is not top of the tree, but certainly second rung when it comes to reels. Saragosas, Saltist and my new favourite Stradic CI4 4000. I have a Stella SW 8000 now but a bit to powerful for the fishing I like.

Rods on the other hand has to be tops. I justify this in that they are up to the task, and I look after them better than the reel. Probably similar to Rally days, suspension and tyres above fiddling with the engine.

But as some mentioned one passion one price. Fishing, rallying, golf, scuba diving etc has now totally given up for fishing alone.

There is some serious fishing and tackle junkies

Fri, 2011-11-11 13:42

on here. And it is about how you justify the coin. As long as my hobbie stays cheaper than my previous I am happy. But unless I am going to compete in comps (I dont like them) I will never have the best combo with the best lines, sviwels, knots etc.

However that doesnt stop me from spending a little more on quality because quality last longer than cheapies. Some of my quality reels are 5yrs old, used and abused and still as new. The cheap shiiite have died, especially up here in Dampier where you can loose cheapies fast on bigger than expected fish.

It doesnt mean a Jarvis walker wont do the job, it might, but more likely it will kark it soon. I would rather save up for qualities than have 20 dead cheapies lying around. And as a semi-antique collector I have all my reels over my fishing life still lying around. An old Mitchell from the 80s still works perfectly.

I've bought the Mrs about $5,000 worth of jewellery in the last 12 months and a Ford Territory (with 7 seats for all the kids and the school mums movie nights!). This way she can't say much when I start looking for a bigger boat shortly. Only problem is - between her and my two daughters (and another one due Feb), I don't think there will be any money left for me!!

Mon, 2011-11-14 16:37

If you catch a nice Dhu or pink around 9 to 10 kg,clean it and get say 5-6 kg worth of fillets then times it by the going rate at the market.Usually you could buy a good quality outfit for what it cost to buy that many fillets. That works sometimes , but a trip to see the pretty dolphins always brings the minister of finance around to the correct frame of mind.

I moonlight as a pimp

Tue, 2011-11-15 10:47

Fishing is becoming an expensive hobby with all the bling out there so I have had to source a second income so that I was not taking away from the family budget. As a teenager I always wanted to be a pimp so I figured I would give it a bash. I tried recruiting a few ladies but unfortunately the only takers were those that would have struggled to give away the coochie for free.

So what I did was purchase an old school bus that I converted to a mobile brothel. I then purchased four blow up dolls. Two white, one black and the other is of Asian appearance.

I take my bus out of weekends and park it in Northbridge. I then walk the streets looking for intoxicated and frustrated looking males who had obviously lucked out with the ladies.

The cost is a lot cheaper than what these guys would pay for a real lady so about 50% of the time they partake of the plastic delights. I ensure that they always use condoms so that the ladies do not get messy and I have wet wipes in the bus that they must use to clean up after themselves.

It has taken about 12 months but now I have a market share and repeat customers.

Low overheads and initial capital investment makes my venture a profitable one pays for my fishing toys and trips. If you are ever in Northbridge on weekends look out for a purple bus with dark tinted windows. If you mention Fishwrecked I will give you a 25% discount.

Wanna go into business together???

Drive the ole bus up here to Karratha, where there are 12000 single blokes and you could make a killing.  I have enough room on the nature strip to store the bus on weeknights, then you just gotta cruise on to the Karrath Tavern to start business for the night.  The skimpy barmaids will have the punters raging to go.  Big bucks up here, you could double your price!!

My father became ill at 50.

Wed, 2011-11-16 06:25

My father became ill at 50. We sold his boat so mum would have enough money. He had worked hard, saved his money but never really enjoyed it.

After two years as he melted into his hospital bed he said look after mum and keep buying the fishing gear.

We can get caught up in work and saving for something we may not get to experience. Fishing is about smelling the roses. Fishing is a family past time, a great contributor to physical and mental health; an excellent social bond across cultures.

Who would argue against participation? Its beats a weekend sat in front of the television.

Many of the fishing websites are testament of fishing's contribution to society.

When you consider the exercise and opportunity for some fresh food meals fishing is cheap really.

Sat, 2011-11-26 12:43

I find it very easy to justify it to myself being a fishing fanatic.

I haven't had to justify it to the wife yet she wasn't aware of exactly what fishing gear I had when we met so a few reels just happened to morph into better more expensive ones all by themselves and she is none the wiser.

Getting a new GPS and sounder for the boat is going to be a little harder to pull off.  Still thinking of my options.  If I go the hummingbird sidescan route on the sounder it may be another case of unnoticed morphing (currently have a hummingbird)....

She never tells me how much her shoes or dresses really cost anyway........

Cheers

i recently spoke to a tackle

i recently spoke to a tackle shop employee and said i didnt wasnt to spend to much on a light bream rod because i spent "about" ;) $2500 on jigging gear in the last couple of months, his reply was is that all i spent over $3000 in the last 2 weeks, now im pretty sure i earn more than a tackle shop employee (unless he's selling something i dont know about on the side) so i went out and spent another $1000 on jigging gear and bream lures in the last couple of days.

justified!
