yeah lol that was me that
yeah lol that was me that got the ray. estimated it at about 30kg+ pain in the arse (and back for that matter) to fight with big whooping runs. left me with about 30 meters of line and i mamanged to manhandle him in. fought for closer to 30 minutes than 20. using two snelled 6/0's on a whole yellowtail. hooked up to one yesterday but it busted me off.
plenty of whiting and yellowatail around aswelll

Bloody rays
They seem to be haunting Hillarys lately. Measey, I would take a big rod down and throwing out a mulie of a whole squid. But it may depend on the wind.

Hi Ya,
When I was a lot younger I did weight training 6 to 8 hours per week. Did that for 10 years or more. At my peak, I could lift and put onto my shoulder, a 40kg bag of fertilizer with one hand.
It is now about 14 years since I gave up training. I now have major arthritus problems in both thumbs and serious shoulder problems. I now battle to lift a 20kg bad of fertiolizer with one hand, let alone put it on my shoulder.
I lifted you ray from the water with ease. I'd estimate 15 to 20kgs, but closer to 15. Yes, I appreciate that the oinitial weight was lessened by the effect of the water, but it was out of the water when your dad (I presume) cut the hooks out. Rays can apply a lot more pressure on your line than they actually weigh.
Having said that, you did very well. You were sure in trouble when I arrived as it was obvious that you have very little line left on your spool. Pitty about the damage.
You made some comment about having helped someone a day or so previously with a ray and I saw that on the forum when I got home. Put 2 and 2 together and guesseed it was you. Pitty I didn't realise it was you at the time cause I've had said hello instead of helping you and running. You did well and had quite an audience. Hopefully next time it will be something worth keeping.
I thought a couple of the water craft might cut you off though. Especiually that stupid mongrel in the big yatch that came across very close than the female in the yak. Just how stupid are some people.
Otoshi, if you want to see a big Western Black (and I'm sure SOI's was a Western Black - it sure wan't an Eagle Ray) go to Augusta. In the river they have a number of tame ('Tame' being a relative term) ones that will take fish frames from your hand. As you stand in the river to clean your fish, if you don't hurry up with the frames, they will suck your toes!! Very gentle and a lot of fun to have around. They certainly providea lot of entertainment when people who don't know they are there see them for the first time. I'm sure some of them walk on the water. Those rays would be well over 1 metre across the wings, possible 1.5m. They would weigh,... who knows ... 80, 90 or 100 kgs or more. I weigh (Shhhh) about 115kg and they would easily knock me over if I weasn't careful. You really have to brace yourself, even though they are swimming quite slowly.
Anyway, well done SOI.
Cheers.

thanks for that dad wouylda
thanks for that dad wouylda cut the line off if hadnt helped. still the biggest thing i have caught. dad reckoned it wooda been close to 30 but i initiallty guessed it at around 25. the next cast the spool almost fell off so im glad i brought it in quickly. i mamged to keep the lline down into the water wen that yacht went past but i felt some bumps from it. at least i know my knots are good. the two that i helped land last month were real big blacks. the tail woulda been about as thick as a small desert bowl, but this ones was quite small.

Hi Ya, Always happy to help
Hi Ya,
Always happy to help out. And much better to see him swim away without the jewellery, albeit with minor cuts to the skin. The cuts weren't deep so he will recover without any trouble.
As I said to your dad, they can curl the tail up but not under so once you tip them onto their back like I did, the tail is taken out of the equation. Yes, they can sweep their tail from side to side, but with it on the rocks like it was, that wasn't a problem either.
Happy fishing. May see you down there again some day.
Cheers.

for the guy's/lady's
for the guy's/lady's concerned about a ray's or skates tail rather put a towl over it than turning the fish on its back - the reason being that most ray's/skates over ten killo's are females and they carry there young live ... so when the fish is turned over the pups end up "stabbing" the female, thus causing her to die with all the pups still inside - killing them aswell.(1= a possible 10)
90% of ray's/skates tails are harmless its the barb that u need to watch out for - located at the base of the tail.
next time u catch one remember how much fun u had enjoying the "fight" and try release the fish safely to "fight" another day.

i have fished them both a lot
and for bread and butter species the north is alot better
fish near the disabled platform with a paternoster style whiting rig, coral prawns as bait and star sinker and ull get tons of fish
i even get the odd small tailor on it which is always bit of fun
always works for me
ask Son Of Irish
i donate heaps of my whiting and stuff to him
cos most of the time im there to fish for something to do haha

Measey, It is in the north wall, on the ocean side from
Spinnakers Restaurant. It is always worth taking some lures along - especially if the blowies become a pain.

And get one of those squid spike lure things that you attach
a bait to. Always good to throw on your line if the squid are chewing on your mulies.(Colin 1 - Co-founding member of the prestigious Colin Club)

Try different sized gangs. Smaller ones, 2/0s, you can
rig up with half mulies in case the skippy are around.

easy to find usually has a
easy to find usually has a few younger kids playing around looking for crabs but the can get a bit annoying when they knock over ur rods.,
i usually have a small rod with a small ball sinker and a size 4 hook for whihitng and skippy and such, a bigger rod usually with a set of gangs (usually 3/0 or 4/0) for baitcasting mulies and a bigger rod with 5/0's or 6/0's for much bigger stuff

what weight line have you
what weight line have you got on your big reel? i use any sinker really but you need to get it out far and youll probably need a lead weight. if you catch a yellowtail or whiting or such, put it on your hooks live and itll last longer and youll have more chance without the pickers getting into it much
