fishing off the beach or
fishing off the beach or boat ??
if off the beach/rocks ... im about to put a 651c alvey on the market with a 7 wrap rod ... it holds about 1km of 8 kg line from memory and you cant break the bloody things :P
you can run just about any weight line on it as long as its castable.

i got an old alvey 600 A6
i got an old alvey 600 A6 estuary and its over 25 years old and its only been in for servicing once three years ago. u can also fdrop them into salt water to get rid of the sand. just wash them over with fresh water from the hose. how much are u sellin the alvey for..... just for an idea cos im looking at a new one and im seeing if i can get one secondhand for cheaper. it handles a whole skippy and a big sinker well. im assuming ferals alvey is larger, so his could manage more. i use it at hillaries all the time.

Live Baiting
If off a beach I suggest the same reel as above but with a 12ft rod of 8/9 wrap not the 7 x wrap as this can work against you if you have a big fish on and its a long way out.but thats only my opinion.
The Alvey allows you to cast live herring with a big lead but if you are going to balloon off some of the rocks/beaches give a bit of thought to a big overhead with braid instead of mono. This reel can also be used on a boat if needed and has a higher retrieve rate than the alvey.

You can get clips for your
You can get clips for your line for live bait. There are return and non-return types depending on where you are fishing or what for. You basically have a large swivel or a ring as a stopper on your main line, then a sinker attached to that. You cast the sinker out, then put your rod in the rod holder, you then attach the clip to your line. The clip has a trace to hooks and the live bait on it, and it 'slides' down the line. A bit more fun to fight if you can use a rod too light to cast a herring.
line size depends what you are fishing from and where, same with reel. You'll probably go a heavier trace than the main line (perhaps even wire if you want sharks or mackies up north).
