bugger...I was hoping to giove Hamelin bay a go too.....whats the issue with the ramp?

 as mentioned the ramp aint the best. often covered in weed  if the swell is up a bit you could just about forget about it and if still the same as a few years back its timber and gets real slippery. a fisho was killed there a year or 2 back . 

in saying that if you can launch there is islands out from there and anything is possible in those waters. 

The Hamelin Bay ramp is fine other than a bit of cross swell that can be a problem on the bigger days. Seriously, if some people think Hamelin ramp is bad, they should try some of the ramps over east. Reverse the boat & trailer down on a rope/s with someone to guide it. Totally eliminates the slippery ramp problem. If the swell is an issue for launching at the ramp, then it isn't safe to be out there in a boat in the 1st place so you shouldn't be trying to launch anyway. Hamelin is a decent ramp, you just have to know what you are doing & be a bit carefull of the swell.

 yeah i have used the ramp once about 2yrs back can understand it can get abit of swell pushing in ,many crays around the reef near the jetty?

If you happen to be out at sea and the swell comes up do not be a hero and try to put the boat on the trailer. Drop your decky off and get him to drive the car and trailer round to the new marina at Augusta, its a lot safer than breaking peoples arms and legs as well as damaging boats, cars and trailers.

The problem with the ramp is its lke a finger poking straight out and any sort of swell washes the trailer and boat off to one side or the other, we were lucky while pro fishing there in that we had a key to the gate and would launch and retrieve off the beach next to the ramp savng all the hassles.

I've spent a lot of time down at Hamelin over the lstt 20 years and see a lot of people hurt themselves (some seriously) or seriously damage their boats thinking they could handle the conditions...

Hamelin ramp is an open beach ramp, no jetty, with part sof concrete broken away on the water line. Often if its low tide trailer needs to go back onto the sand.

ANY swell will see you having issues getting boat back onto the trailer. Any wind from the west or north, forget it

Other issues to be mindful of if you can get out there, most of the bay in uncharted, and plenty of shallow lumps very close to shore and the island, so be varey careful Also plenty of reef breaks around the island both north and south so again be careful.

Augusta marina is easy as , great facility and plenty of good fishing near by as well.

 I have launched a tinny there a few times with no dramas  but on days with lower swell. There are a few bits of shallow reef close to the ramp on the north side. We were chasing the salmon one time and a rogue wave almost flipped us, so be careful your close to the shore. Keep an eye out to sea. I have heard from a local mate that there is plenty of Crays around the island.
