Furuno 627 vs dragonfly

In the market for a new sounder it's either going be a furuno 627 or the raymarine dragonfly

can anyone offer a opinion on how the perform compared to each other for the guys

that have used them, I have been using the 627 on a mates boat pretty impressed with that unit

Cheers Ben

furuno vs dragonfly

Mon, 2013-09-09 21:51

For me it is the furuno, I do have a dragonfly and I am not as over the moon with it as other dragon fly owners, the main proponent being Vinesh. I will admit the down vision chirp has its value in presenting a tri chrome image of the sea floor and the narrow band chirp has the advantage of separating the furuno blob that represents a fish school into individual fish traces and here in lies its main advantage. For me reading the nature of the sea floor is of greater importance, discrimination of of a 64 colour pallet that is present in the furuno is vastly more helpful than the more limited colour palette of the dragonfly. No I don't get excited with accu fish or the bottom discrimination icons that the furuno has but the wider colour pallet and the furuno superior software algorithm that puts more colour densities up on the display are what have won me. Interpreting WHAT IS ON the display is more useful for me than the raymarine definition of the fish blob. Colour variance within the display is the key to interpretation, and I say this after 37 years of commercial fishing experience, having said this I can understand the popularity of the dragon fly with the definition of fish being much easier to understand by novice fishermen. One final issue the dragon fly is very cheaply constructed, mass produced in china its construction is very flimsy, the transducer and sounder mounts are poorly designed and fabricated, it is built to a price and it represents good value for what it is, an entry level sports fishing sounder that is easy to understand with a good simple display with gps, the furuno is a recreational sounder as well but it is more robust, a bullet proof mounting system and has a more user friendly direct access to the main sounder functions and is more intuitive to the experienced fisherman , it will give you better deep water performance in a tone burst format. From my deep water experience the dragonfly has depth limitations the chirp signal is vulnerable to deep water current and topside surface slop. The unit does well in good conditions but the let down occurs in typical west coast conditions, wind and wave action are the enemy of chirp . The back up of furuno in PERTH is vastly superior as a full work shop and warranty service back up is on your door step. The dragon fly is repair return to the U.S. the eastern states agent is not able to repair the unit which is fully sealed. Taylors in Henderson will provide expert back up instantly and all the help you will ever need. Cant wait for the response from the dragon fly enthusiasts.

oh im not in opposition to furuno. I love furuno haha. The next boats getting a 295!

But for the $550 the dragonfly is brilliant. I dont use the downvision to be honest. but can be useful. The chirp in under 100m works brilliantly.

disagree with the weather bit ive used it in sloppy as conditions and alll good! Mounting flush its great but the truion mount is horrible!

if you need the gps then go the ray if you have more to spend and no need for gps go the 627!
