Do we get these flying squid

Do we get these flying squid around here? One night when I was working on a boat near the shelf off Albany we had a heap of squid that were launching themselves into the air all over the place. Ended up with almost 2 dozen dead on the deck in the morning. It was a pretty windy night and they seemed to be launching themselves into the wind and then getting blown away out of sight!

A couple of years ago in the n/w had the family up and we were snorkeling/mucking about in a lagoon. The dog was out on a bit of reef , say 50m out and barking at a occy that was poking its eyes out of the water.

I was slowly making my way over to the dog with a mask on and the occy shoots out of the water and basically runs across the top and goes back under about a meter from the beach under a ledge!

It was a real WTF moment and all my family saw it . Talk about fish outa water lol!!

I was trolling for a pike(snook) on the shallow ribbon weed out the front of Dunsborough earlier this summer and watched a very big squid launch out of the water and miss the  boat by inches when it reentered. Probably covered 1.5m and a height of 30-40cm. Blew me away.

As a point of interest I was sitting out from Forrest Beach (between Bun and Buss) yesteday in about 6 metres and watched (from a distance of say 250m) 20-30 cm fish erupting out of the water (prob mullet) then sat quite amazed as a mackeral of at least a metre, launched a good 3 metres clear of the water. Did this twice in a few minutes.

Hahaa - reminds me of one of my first visits to Coral Bay.

Travelling in a Penguin Phantom half cab at about 20 knots past 5 fingers. It was a little windy when a squid launched from the water and smacked into the windscreen before bouncing off over our heads and landing back in the water (no doubt very dead!). We nearly sh*t ourselves ! Dunno how high it launched but it must have been at least 1 - 2 meters to hit the windscreen. I still laugh when I think about it - whats the last thing to go through a squids head when he hits a windscreen at 20 knots . . . . . .  .  his tentacles.

I have seen them jump about 18 inches out of the water here in Dampier.  Ususally when you scare them.
