Fishing rule query

Hi Guys.

The rules state you can have up to 3 hooks or gangs of hooks per line, correct????

Obviously this makes the 6 hook baitchaser rigs illegal in WA.I stopped using the 6 hook rigs a long time ago, only use the 3 hook type nowdays.

The rule doesnt clarify the number of hooks in a gang.Pretty sure 3 hooks and a treble is fine(I dont use trebles). Are 4 hook gangs actually legal? I prefer a smaller 4th hook rather than a treble. You can catch smaller fish plus the fish doesnt get mutilated like they do if they have swallowed a treble,a mulie presents better with the smaller 4th hook at the tail.

Would be good if I could get an answer reasonably quickly, down the shed making a variety of gang hooks at the moment ready to go fishing at easter.

Thanks

Andrew

I dont see the point of this rule as long as you keep only the bag limit

Andrew, my understanding is a gang can have as many hooks as you like. A rig can have 3 hooks or gang's on it.

However i couldn't think of time i ever used multiple gangs on the same rig, imagine the tangled mess if you catch a fish that decides to jump.( ie salmon )

I actualy preffer a rig with a 2 hook gang with half a mulie on dropper loop then a single hook on a second dropper.

This covers a lot more species for down south, especialy if the salmon are scarce.

I only use one gang at a time.Just been making 5/0 x3 and a 3/0. I use rolling swivels to link the hooks.

Will continue making 4 hook rigs as it seems its OK.

Take on board the 2 hook gang idea, will make some of them too.

Thanks All.

My interpretation

and how it has been explained to me a few times is that you are allowed 3 hooks, or sets of hooks (gangs) on each attened line. Therefore you would be allowed to have up to 3 sets of gangs on a rig. The make up of the gang is up to you. I often use 5x6/0's for whole gardies when fishing in Kalbarri for Tailor and have done similar when fishing for Mackies.

to answer the Q

to answer the question, yes I think those baitchaser rigs are illegal according to fisheries regs.  But does it really matter? those rigs are designed to catch baitfish like scaly macks yellotail etc.  I reckon if you stick to the bag limits your fine by me.

I think the rule is in place so you cant send out a line with 20 plus hooks on it like that kiwi guy did on extreme fishing last wednesday. Its almost like a set line

This has come up a few times. Last time people decided that there was no max number of lines or hooks, for boat fishing, only for land-based. When I was a kid fishing at the north mole, we used to split the pack of 6 into two rigs, one for me, one for my bro.
