Metro Macks - at what price?

Hi all,

I'm one of the unfortunate few not lucky enough to have access to a boat at this magical time when water temperates are up and the pelagics are running in metro waters. Being relatively new to fishing I don't know if this has happened in recent years or if the warm waters are a bit of a fluke event.

I'm just curious as to whether warm waters at this time of year will have an impact on our winter fishing? Keen to hear your thoughts purely from a learning angle.

Cheers,

Buschy

Few from shore

Thu, 2011-03-31 20:29

buschy, quite afew have been caught from shore as well. I think the water temp has been higher than normal.

But  Dont think the fish being caught will make too much of an impact overall. But will be a few interesting months ahead.

It will be interesting

It will be interesting to see what happen's after this warm water goes away. The fish that have been caught around Perth and down south is mind blowing.

All the years i have fished metro, i don't remember anything like this happening.

A few years ago we had one of the best Salmon runs ever . Water temp might have been the reason, not sure.

Water temp and currents still challange the most experienced fisherman(person) to this day.

All we can do is record this info and try to use it for future use.

Likewise German, I fished some NEVER fail spots last weekend and got nothing. The jewies seem to have moved out deeper (hopefully not dead)

merging currents

Perths a great spot for a capital city( for fishermen or fisherchicks )

In some ways we cant lose, being at a crossroads of the opposing currents

each year starting early summer the leewin current heads south ,bringing with it warm water and the creatures that live in it.

each year its strength varies, as well as its reach into southern waters but usually peters out near rotto. It creates the corals and soft sponges around the island ,as well as the wahoo ,macks and others that visit. In la nina years like this 27+ on the scale( highest ever recorded since readings began)the opportunities for tangling with macks increase ten fold. They do visit on cooler years but from the personal pain,10 trips, 4-6 hours of trolling each, for 1 mack in 2004 ,its character building in the least.I do have a couple of old fishing guides from the late 50s early 60s that state that the busso jetty was great for macks in late summer,so this years nothing new.

at the same time the cold capes current starts to push up from the south, I believe the salmon migrate with the current which usually stops as it meets the leewin current, at ,you guest it ROTTO. After spawning around rotto the salmons lavae then hitch a ride southwards again on the strengthing leewin current which reaches its peak in late autunm ,early winter. If the salmon hit a very hot and strong current early, eg busso ,they wont make it to perth in record numbers.

Call me wierd ,but our family holidays plans and my fishing efforts revolve around this system. In strong current years, the summer is less about dhus and more about that singing drag that macks do so well, and plans are drawn for south coast beach holidays, to reconect with the memories of gutters full of hungry salmon, on the warren and other beachs.

In low strength years, when we lived in Doubleview ,it was driving to brighton or swanbourne beach ( 5 mins) where my 9 year old daughter got her first salmon ,in the shadow of ob city. The look on the faces of the early morning walkers and backpackers was priceless.

I say go with the flow man , pun intended, and fish for what the system brings

Fri, 2011-04-01 15:01

So how is the fishing in Northern WA going at the moment? Is the water to warm at the moment, or is it about the usual up there for this time of year?

Not to sure about right up

Fri, 2011-04-01 21:18

Not to sure about right up north, but just back from Dongara, five days fishing two boats three in each and only got two sweetlip for the hole trip, seen lots of tuna but just could not get a hook up.But as they say in Ireland the crack was still good, and as one of the boys say on the forum better a bad days fishing than a good day at work. Even tryed crabing a night witch turned up a few small ones and a couple of bream in the pots, think i will stick to Perth Two rocks i know my spots and usely pick up a couple of nice fish,

Buschy, keep in mind we have had a Supermoon and a substantial earthquake in the area.  Demersal species arent that happiest when a big rumble occurs.
