Finding new ground

Howdy all
I have sold my tinnie and have now bought a Frazer western craft 525.
As I only went out to the five fathom bank in warnbro sound in my old boat. I now want to go further out to the 30s and 40m area.
My question is is there structure around those depths I should be looking for and where is a good place to start in finding new ground as I have never been out in those depths fishing before. Any help would be most appreciated.
Cheers Darryl

you will need a reasonable sounder to find, the area has been well fished and I have found some of the best success is to drift. Get yourself a sea anchor to slow the drift - after fruitless morning trolling for tuna last winter we had a 2-3 hour drift and picked up 2 solid pinkies - we have a pretty good sounder and there was nothing on the bottom that indicated a dip or lump. Sometimes you get lucky I guess!

Wow, don't try 2-3 hour drifts.
Theres plenty of ground in the 30-50m area, but its a big area. All the way from the back of the 5 to 15-20nm out. Theres plenty of nothing out there too, so if the bottom looks flat just keep looking.
Look for pots, that's always a good start.
There are some areas shown on the charts too, though these would get flogged.
I tend to look for small areas, might just be coral patches, don't have to be big lumps.
Good luck.

yeah well we had nothing
yeah well we had nothing better to do!,
I know a few old guys at our club that go out on an converted crayboat and spend the whole day drifting, quite surprising what they pick up...

Pros have started moving
Pros have started moving pots in shallower so ground can be easily found looking around cray pots.
You will need a half decent sounder and GPS, from my experience out of rockingham, once off the back of the 5 its a fair way out to more noticable structure, probably starting at about 15-17 mile out.

Travelling
When travelling to and from a spot don't go straight down the dotted line, each time you travel step your course over 100 metres each time and keep an eye on the sounder
