Dual purpose rod.

Sorry for yet another rod thread but there's just way too many brands to keep track of it all.
Only get out as a deckie in Perth every once in a while so not looking to spend too much.
The fishing we do on the boat I go out in is some bottom bashing for dhu's etc. and jigging for sambos.
Stiff enough that rod isn't bent over double just by the big sinker for bottom bashing Vs Exciting for the jigging.
Using a good eggbeater with 50lbs braid. Fish mainly for sport, eating them is only a secondary bonus. Would like for combo to be damn close to snapping point for the better sized sambos around. Happy to loose a few/bust the rod rather than be hauling things in on a winch and broomstick.
Any suggestions?

Awwww Shucks
Set myself up for that big time.
HOWEVER: I really hope that you don't use yours for too much bottom bashing.

Budget? I have a van staal
Budget? I have a van staal which is perfect for that kinda thing. Doesnt buckle on sinkers, bends nicely for 50lb but you can put some serious hurt on it. Btw, what I did was figure out the max sinker I would use was then went around to various tackle shops and used a bit of rubber band to attach to rod and see how it went. Did the same for 2kg (small fish) as I wanted it to flex a bit on the smaller stuff, then had a set of scales and a reel set for 10kg to see if it could handle all that.
Main thing is budget. A few jigging rods that would work due to their action.

Did you seriously go to tackle stores with a rubber?
band.Next thing you will be measuring reel parts.Take it from me you can put as much science into fishing as you want just when you think you have it figured out the fish change their habits and you are back to square one.The main reason i buy higher end stuff is because it puts up with the abuse i put it under. If people are out there reading this and start thinking that going to tackle stores and taking up the guys that work theres time with rubber bands because they read it on fishwrecked then dont because all you will do is piss people off.Sorry if this post pisses you off Matt because i know that is how you work things out but just think of it from the other side of the counter. These guys work in the industry because they enjoy the lifestyle not for the money. How would you deal with it if you owned a tackle store and every second person walked in with a rubber band and tested 20 rods. The other thing is dont walk in and start bending rods on your own people it isnt in your job description as a customer.
So tell me have you got your info from years on the water or hours on the internet?

I did it looking for one
I did it looking for one specific rod (which ended up costing $500. awesome rod though and worth it) out of dozens other rods I bought that I havent and the guys at the tackle store were quite happy for me to do it and now i'm taking up all their time? lol. God forbid they help customers :o
Actually, I went there during quiet times and it doesnt take that long anyways :p Maybe 30 seconds per rod. No more than loading them up normally (or do you not load up any rods while figuring out what to buy?). Given a bit of experience, you can do it all by feel, but gotta get that experience somehow.
Go to the right stores and they're always friendly and happy to help as long as you're not wasting lots of their time (which I wasnt). If they know you anyways they dont mind you trying them out by yourself either. Somehow I hardly think most people will need to do that, but hey, if you want to be sure on a big purchase then go ahead and do it. If the tackle shop isnt happy with you testing out a few rods, go find one with decent customer service to give your money to or buy online. Sure, dont piss them off or waste their time but if you're not and they're fine with it, then wheres the problem ;) (or really does the problem only exist with someone who wasnt there? ;) )

Sorry allrounder, but if I
Sorry allrounder, but if I was about to spend $500 on a rod and the shopowner wasn't prepared for me to take a while to pick the right rod he can keep his rod and I'll look elsewhere.
Fair enough they don't want everyone in the shop seeing how much a rod can bend but if you're serious about buying then why not? You break it, you bought it, what's the problem?

Mate i know a lot of people that work in the stores and
behind the scenes and will honestly say that not one of them would mind spending the time to talk and bend as many rods as you like to find the one you want or like. That said there are people around that go to the tackle stores and work out what they want (after spending an hour of the workers time)then go and order it online or buy it from a chain store down the road that is run by juniors that couldnt give them the advise because they only learnt to tie their shoe laces 5 years ago.The other thing is they cant come on forums like this and say what i am saying here because they will have issues at work. There is a lot of them on here and most of them are known identitys with in the industry. If any of them dis agree with anything i am saying feel welcome to pm or call me and i will retract my posts.

like i said mate
i didnt want to piss you off .Which it looks like i havent
Its is just that it is hard enough for the people in the industry as it is with explaining rules, giving advise, getting hit up for spots, getting abuse when they tell people that the rod they shut in a car door isnt a warranty issue and having people walk in 2 mins before closing to get them to show them how to tie a herring rig on a saturday night. They are humans they have a life outside of serving customers. The only issue i have with the net is a few out in the world that read posts on sites like this go in the shops thinking they know better than the folks that work there and then try and tell them their job.It is like me coming to you and tell you how to engineer something. The biggest piss off is that someone can read a post like this one but fail to read one about demersal bans and still buy dhufish rigs and a box of cali squid and when they get told they cant target demersal fin fish then turn around and say they are after gummy sharks and kgs on a lump in 45m

So from the responses I should be looking for pe 3-5 with recommended cast weight of around 150-175g?
As far as budget goes $300 would be absolute max.

You'll probably want a jigging rod (or something shorter) so will likely have a jig weight not a cast weight, You'd want minimum 300g jig weight.
Maybe have a look at the new Jigging master terminator rods? Should fit the budget and the style you'd be chasing? I havent had a chance to try one out yet though.

+ 1 for the Monster Mesh.
+ 1 for the Monster Mesh. Great value for money. I have pe3-4 also and one of them would suit you to a tee i reckon. A big sambo could go close to breaking it if thats your thing!! I tied mine off(30lb) to my 'test tree' out the back sat in my 'game chair' and gave it a fair pull, feels good with some nice curve, it pulled a 12kg dhu up not long ago without any problems.

Shopping time.
Thanks for the quick responses all. It's very handy to have some idea for a starting point as there's just so much to look at and when I get to the fishing store I'm like a kid in a candy store.
Will go down to a few tackle stores and have a look see so that I can get a feel for them. Might just have to take a rubber band with me too
. Not too worried about wasting anybodies time, the old boy who runs the local store near me could talk the legs off of a chair. It's a good ploy because I have never once managed to walk in, buy bait, and leave without buying something else.
