Drones - the new future!

Thought I would bring this subject to your notice, considering the amount of disscussion there is here about persons doing the wrong things etc. I saw this program on TV probably SBS about drones and it was quite scary. By drones I mean pilotless flying vehicles. You know the forces are using them to spy and take out unfriendlies in the East. They are now used for coastal surveylance etc. The interesting thing is this is the pilots are sitting in an office on the other side of the world. Soon our entire airforces will be like that. But that is not all, the tecnology on this area is doubling every 18 months !!!!!.

An expo showing all kinds from small "Fly" sized to huge armed aircraft. Hovering taking pictures, directly live streaming information back to the owners. Ones that are about to boom are those used for law enforcement, police now and I mean now do not have to have their millions of dollar choppers, they can look in windows, follow crimes etc, doing far more than the chopper can from their office. Of course the papparatsii (spelling) will have a field day, as they are using them now.

But consider the fisheries watching you and your catch, patrolling the jetties, the water police doing patrols, the list goes on and on. The point is this is happening now, and it is anticipated that these devices will be on our doorstep very soon. to the extent that they are now having to formulate new flying regulations and privacy laws to cope. As they will be flying alongside your aircraft.

It amused me to see real estate agents showing clients around houses from the clients home, looking in windows while the occupants are still there.

I find that wearing a hat

Wed, 2012-09-12 07:28

I find that wearing a hat made from aluminum foil helps block out the messages from space.

Hope it works out for you.

I reckon Iana has a good

Wed, 2012-09-12 11:28

I reckon Iana has a good point. We won’t be able to scratch our bottom without big brother watching soon and get a fine directly debited from your card, that you’ve scratched it too long which will be against the law. (Or a speeding fine, because your vehicle will be hooked up to GPS and reporting speed and position all the time) The privacy law is getting far behind the new technologies. Governments use arguments about “our” safety, but in fact, they are after absolute control over people. Messages from space are our last problem. Ask the guy filmed by police helicopter shagging his misses on a rooftop. I feel so much safer that cops have this footage now. iPhone users, are you happy that all your personal information are stored and accessible by FBI etc. ? I might be a fan of conspiracy theories, but this stuff is actually happening and not getting any better. Personal freedom and privacy will be an obsolete word pretty soon.

I think the relevant

Wed, 2012-09-12 12:37

I think the relevant expression is "Privacy is dead, get over it". People have to accept that they have let government and business, in an attempt to maintain the lifestyles that they wanted, do this.

The only thing left to hope for is that they don't do anything irresponsible with the information that they have collected, and I'm not exactly holding my breath over that one either.

You all do know that this

Wed, 2012-09-12 13:03

You all do know that this technology is about 30-40 years old right? I used my RC plane with a fob video camera to make an aerial view for their school a few years back.

You can get a full FVP setup for less then a grand in the hobby shops now. You don't even need line of sight with the plane anymore with the 2.4g RC transmitters.

I was thinking more of local

Wed, 2012-09-12 13:40

I was thinking more of local police work, fisheries and the such. Off course not to mention the odd private drone out at sea looking at your spots while the pilot sits at home. Have a look on the net, Google drones and see what comes up. Victoria and Queensland police already looking at them to use. Confusion over laws, and privacy, and this is in Australia. I'm not suggesting we all run out and build air-raid shelters, but being aware of this technology and having a disscussion about it is healthy.

Pingers

Wed, 2012-09-12 13:59

I watched that show on SBS last week about these new age drones being developed not only for the military and law enforcement, but for Joe Average, too. It was an interesting topic with lots of ramifications for everyone...especially now that anyone can buy one, sit at home and fly it around.

Brings a whole new meaning to 'pingers' when you're out fishing...you won't see them but they know where you are, can ping your spot and even see if you're catching anything.

As Alfred said, these things have been around (in some form) for quite a while and while this technology is being used for 'good things', we'll all applaud them, but as soon as someone's 'illegal' exploits turn up on the internet, I'm sure all hell will break loose.

If you tell your missus you're going to play golf, you better be on the golf course when she flies her drone over to check up on you

regards
rusty...

Not worried myself - living

Wed, 2012-09-12 17:55

Not worried myself - living in SA with our undermanned fisheries and insurance reporting agency (i.e. police) I don't think it will be a problem here for a while at least.

Would be handy to have one on

Thu, 2012-09-13 13:30

Would be handy to have one on the boat when fishing to get a quick overhead view over a reasonably large area

or work out the best gutter and spot any salmon schools etc off the beach

Fri, 2012-09-14 11:30

Im on your side Iana,  did you audition for big brother Till?  j/k  but privacy is a 'right' we all have if we want it.

Where do you buy those things that shut down all electronic devices within a certain range, like the one in the new batman.

Thanks Jim.

Tryed to post a thread that would be of general interest, with out upsetting anyone. I think in the coming year(s) we will see quite a few of these things around. Consider search and rescue. One Hi-Tech survalance drone costs about $35,000. A commercial helicopter licence costs $40,000 and the chopper $750,000 and up wards. The smaller ones for you & I can buy, work through the 4G network, so can fly anywhere there is 4G coverage. The possibilities are endles, as I mentioned it will bring a new meaning to pinging.
