Dirk Hartog trip 'the block' 22-3-18/ 29-3-18 'Don't fish the cliffs in a northerly swell'

Me and a few mates headed up for our much anticipated trip to the island it did not disappoint. we arrived at steep point Thursday arvo to sleep overnight ready for barge pickup Friday morning we picked up a few bonus squid for bait off the in close weed banks.

Friday morning barge picked us up round 8 then drove the relatively easy 80k/3hr drive to 'the block' which is a campsite complete with long drops and shed to store your gear about 200m walk to prime fishing cliffs. We got to site around lunchtime unpacked and tried to fish the cliffs but due to a cyclone passing well offshore at the time the swell was a bit gnarly we had a few decent hookups but were busted off we decided it was too rough to fish so hit the piss and called it a night

Saturday morning the swell was not much better and the weather report said it would be getting worse so we decided to head to the east side Louisa Bay Area  of the island for the day and overnight to get a bit of fishing in the water was very murky from the weather went for a snorkel in 1m vis and spooked a 2m bronzie as we couldn't see each other we caught a few black snapper, big bream, flathead and small sharks and a 2m bronzie then called it a night

Sunday morning the water had cleared up a bit so took the kayaks out and had a ripper session on 3-5inch placcies catching blue bone, coral trout, just undersized pinkies, Spanish flag, black snapper and cods finally a decent feed of fish. We headed back to the block after some sight seeing to find that the Angel ring at the block had been totally flattened by a huge wave (the ring is situated on top of an 8m cliff face) and a new waterline from the wave 50m from the shed (we had swags in this area on the Friday night when we arrived) would have been cool/shit your pants to have seen it happen but glad we didn't. The swell had dropped so we fished till sunset keeping a keen eye on the ocean and didn't get much interest on baits and lures

Monday morning was no good for ballooning so spun metals placcies and baits for a few follows and hookups on tuna and dropped a Mackie. Went for a Freedive between turtle bay and cape inscription the swell had really churned it up with some nice fish hanging round the plumes of smashed crabs in the water fish of the day would have to be a 70cm pinkie on a surface stick bait and some nice baldies to 7kg on the straight hook

tuesday was the day for ballooning with3 balloons out we had a take on a shore catch garfish  about 500m out

After a long battle we were confronted with our first ever cliff gaff challenge a 2.4 m sailfish a few tense moments and we had it on the cliff high fives all round. Not much else on balloons and pinning/ Demersal fishing was slow Wednesday was a good day for ballooning with a missed hookup on a sailfish and a 10 kilo Spanish mack spinning was a bit more interesting with tuna and long Tom and a spangled emperor on bait. Went for another Freedive near cape inscription for another baldie and parrot fish on sunset it's a beautiful part of the world here in and out of the water. Punctured 2 tyres on way back to camp Thursday was our last day ballooned til 12 for 1 shark on a tailor bait and 2 bust offs out wide due to terminal tackle failure/ low on line too much drag. Packed up our gear and made our way back to the barge for the trip home nxt morning Was an epic trip can't wait to get back there

That Life ring smashed??
I would have loved to see the wave, but it would have scared the Sh*t out of me.

Nice work on the sailfish they are definitely there... a couple of weeks before I went up my mates almost got washed of the cliffs at the block by a king wave whilst fishing.. the water went all the way up to the big bolder and bogged the cars  luckily no one fell in but they were pretty cut up and bruised so always be aware up there your a long way from help.

Certainly looks like the place to take that bit of extra care and make use of the safety gear to protect ones life.
That would have been an all inspiring sight to see the wave that took down the angle ring.
