Initial drop to 42 fathoms (77m)--jeez I'm good to you blokes, doing translation ---where the ground runs along the front is pretty quick, only about 4 miles out IIRC. There is a drop runs along arond 52 fathoms (95m) another few mile out, then it's a fair way out to 65 fathoms,(120m), around 12-13 miles, and a lot of mud in between. The 200m line is something like 40 mile due west of Steep Point, then things happen pretty quickly. This ground all got worked pretty hard years ago when the Goldband goldrush was on, don't know if anyone still works it now.
I ran the crayboat out of the passage there for several months one year when the rivermouth was closed at Kalbarri.
I stay at shelter bay every year and once considered it, but fuel is always at a premium and the distances involved are huge so we quickly shelved the idea
I seem to recall the drop off is only 17 nm from the south passage but I might be mistaken. I recall there were huge snapper schools sitting right on the edge of that drop. Was years ago so I might be mistaken
if you want to get really close, go out off Norwegian Bay. In fact, you have to deep drop off Norwegian if you want to fish off it, at least up the north end. And only about 4 mile off the South Lefroy entrance to 200m, too.
Thanks to all for thier input and suggestions. Much appreciated . I have been going to steep point now for 20 years, and wanted to do something a bit different.

You need to go a very ong way to get any real depth.

Jurien is the closest along the lower-mid west coast.

Navionics phone app is your friend.
Let's you do exercises like that without firing up your plotter. Invaluable for planning and dreaming.
Anyway, about 6 miles out will get you past 200, and it drops off very quickly past that. But, of course, going north or south will add miles.
