Deck mount outriggers
Submitted by bsir on Tue, 2017-10-24 22:14
i have a set of deck mount outriggers, the kind where the base is mounted on the gunnel alongside the rod holder.
has anyone used these mountings before and are they any good?
i know they are cheap but before I cut holes in the gunnel I'd like to know that they will work ok.
thanks

I have them
you need to have the deck mounts mounted properly.probably with backing plates.
i have a set of reelax mounts and 5.5m from memory and used to tow large pushers without any issues.
steve Marwick fitted mine and rigged my reelax outriggers with stingers.
very happy with his work.

Had some
They are fine as long as you have solid gunnels with some backing plates. One thing to consider though is the lower you have them the more angle required on the rigger poles meaning you have less spread. Outriggers mounted on a hardtop or a targa bar can be run flatter thus allowing you to get the full length of the rigger poles as spread from the boat.
I have bought some cheap ones to start. Word of advice pay the extra at the start and get some decent ones.

^^ that's good advice. There
^^ that's good advice.
There are riggers in the medium price bracket that are excellent value for money.
Pay to get someone that knows what they are doing to help set them up. They can be really easy to use or they can be a disaster depending how they are rigged.
Does anyone know where the love of god goes, when the waves turn the minutes to hours?

Mount em right mate cheap
Mount em right mate
cheap ones or expensive ones doesn’t matter so much, but either way if mounted wrong you’ll crack the gunnels on most small glass boats - mine work good but weight is distributed between gunnel and lower down inside the coamings - I welded tube on end of riggers so they go about 10 inches thru gunnel mount and into a second hole lower down in coaming....
i can run at any angle I want including flat with no issues... we can get a full length flat speed up 90 degrees front to back.

another option to consider
also look at rod riggers as an option
you don't get the same lure spread and the lures will still possibly be in dirty water, but much much easier to setup quickly
I have a set as I sometimes do not take out my outriggers
a good idea could be to run them in your rocket launcher if you have one

here's a good idea

Thanks
thanks for the info guys.
i have some spare 5mm Ali that I can use as a back plate. I reckon that'll solve my problem.
i looked at the rod diggers but since I already have the outriggers, figure I may as well use them.
