Cray rope for anchor rope
Submitted by Jim on Sat, 2020-07-04 10:55
Howdy,
I need a bit of advice regarding anchor rope, in particular using cray rope as anchor rope. The rope I do have currently is old and degraded and cant afford to replace today. I have cray rope and was wondering about the pitfalls of using it as anchor rope?
Is it due to no stretch? I just want to get out tonight for a fish.
If I get a fish up, Ill try and do a report for the first time in a long time!

8mm Rope
Unless you are trying to anchor a 3.0 metre tinny then 8mm rope would suit but anything bigger you want to seriously think about stronger rope. Your life may depend on it.

Pot rope doesn't handle as well
When referring to pot rope, it can be polypropelene ("rag") rope, or polyethylene, the shinier, harder stuff. PE has more stretch, PP has very little. If you are pulling by hand, as I assume you are, PP is better, as you get more grip, but silver rope beats them both hands down for that. Silver (staple ) rope has little memory, and will fall more evenly, where both PP and PE will be more prone to getting twist, as they are just lots of monofilaments twisted together, harder and in more need of training to get it to coil. Silver rope also holds a knot better. Silver rope, for a given diameter, is not as strong as PP, similar to PE. eg, 12mm silver rates at about 1800kg BS, PP is normally rated at about 2200 kg bs for same diameter.
