cray pot with no froats

went out from Mindarie this morning and while looking for one of our pots we came across a rope floating on the surface. The pot had been run over and the floats chopped off. Thinking it might be ours we pull up and grab the rope only to discover it had some features identifying it as not being ours. So we did not pull it in but attached a spare unmarked float on so hopefully the owner would of marked his drop and would still be able to pull his pot.
Then out of know where charging in from a distance appears Fisheries they must of been hiding under a wave or something as I had no idea of a boat anywhere near us.
Anyway we found our last pot and they pulled up next to us checked our floats licenses etc and we explained the pot we found and what we did.
(I have no doubt that these guys were watching us from somewhere) everything was all good they said that what we did was exactly what we were suppose to do.
They then proceed to pull the pot we marked and threw back the half a dozen crays that were in there.
So if you are missing a pot off Mindarie, Fisheries have it and will return if your License number is on it.

Cheers.

So I guess fisheries would have put it down to you guys taking care of a navigational hazard. I ran over a pot coming back from Rottnest that I didn't see and was able to re-tie the cut rope and floats back together. They would have had 30m of rope out in 12m of water which didn't help..

Floats

Tue, 2015-12-08 12:37

While we are on the subject, while fishing for herring on friday we had a set of floats drift up to the boat, off Mindarie. We picked them up but they are at my mates house so cant give the ID number till tomorrow.

If nobody ID's floats on here should we report to fisheries??

Out fishing this morning,in close at the back of Garden Island- Counted at least 20 sets of floats washed up onto the back beach.

Some colour code(red/white) most plain white, very little rope attached to them. Never seen this many over the years of fishing behind there?

You shouldn't see any floats

Wed, 2015-12-09 16:27

You would think the GI environment officer would clean them up of the beach.

Went to check mine yesterday

Thu, 2015-12-10 17:01

Went to check mine yesterday and could only find one of mine in about 19 meter off the FFB. Dropped two pots very close together last week. Cut Yellow rope - could see it about 5 meters down. Saw a big BIG shark aswell near them. My pots are engraved so we will see. But I wonder if some one drives over the rope would they not notice? Or if they do and need to cut the rope why not hand the float in?

Went out today to try and locate and no luck as it was very unpleasent out there

funny you should say that about floats under the surface , my decky had to go for a swim behind covenrty reef on wensday morning , I said to him don't think we have enough rope on that steel pot , I will lower it down and wont let go until its on the bottom finally lets go of the floats and see them settle a meter below the surface , you idiot I say told you to hang on until It was on the bottom (lucky we have been mates from primary school he is an incredibaly strong little barstard) right I said over you go best get that pot back , to my surprise for a bloke that is paranoid about sharks over he go's gets the floats half drowns dragging up it back to the boat ladder , gaff that loop in the floats he says , ok I say as he pulls himself out of the water only problem with that was gaff went into his leg as well , funny as he shot up the ladder , you prick , sorry mate , we got the pot back but, ah its such fun living down in the metro area now and being retired

"ya cant do that" I said "it's someones pot"....."just tie an empty bottle (float) to it and report it to fisheries" I said
"maybe the real owners will come get it" so they put it back where it came from.

that is how the story ended right ?

they headed in with it probably not the right thing to do but they did remove a nav hazard (and they were old blokes I am guessing in there 70s)
