Hello all in a bit of bother of what to get in the way of sounders , gps unit/s. i personaly like to be able to look at seperate units and also the fact that if on brakes down i still have some idea what im doing on the water. On the other hand all the latest ones are coming out as combos while this is all good the fact remains if it brakes your stuffed. Im thinking sperate units furuno 620 or 627 sounder with a lowrance ? gps or comdo unit lowrance hds10 ,what do you think

I am putting a deposit down

Tue, 2014-07-29 20:07

I am putting a deposit down tomorrow on a simrad nss7 combo, transducer and navionics gold card for less than $1500.  The feature I love about this combo unit is that when you see fish on the sounder, you hold your finger on it and it plots a mark to navigate you back there.  Even works with structure scan and fish off to the side of the boat. (Structure scan is aftermarket add on).  It is touch screen and you can drag the sounder history back quite a way I believe.  It costs a bit, but worth it I reckon.

How big is your boat?

Tue, 2014-07-29 20:41

Sub 16 foot, go a combo unit. 18/19 foot+, go individual units.

Seriously though, you shouldn't really be thinking like they're goin to break or fail, especially if you go brand new. Sure, most units will eventually die, but it's usually after 8-10 years (or more), and by then technology would've changed and you'll want/need something new anyway.

My Hds5 is about 6 years old, gets soaking wet every trip, gets knocked around in the gear bag, screen is scratched, fallen off the boat about 50 times when I'm home and unpacking, and yet it still fires up every time, and functions perfectly.

 Not sure what your budget

Tue, 2014-07-29 21:46

Not sure what your budget is, but look at the youtube videos of the nss soundersounder.  The 7, 8, and 12 inch screens all have the same functionality.

Then check out the 12 "

Then check out the 12 " version!  The other thing to consider is the other stuff like radar that you can add to this system later.  It's a fully integrated navigation system.

I think the Simrad also has

I think the Simrad also has the wireless interface you can add on so you can use your iPad as a second head unit somewhere else on the boat. Just a shame they didn't let you view the sounder on the ipad at the back of the boat while the charts were still on at the helm. At least you can control the Simrad from the iPad as well.

Where did you pick the SIMRAD unit up from Randall?

Local or did you buy online? I would love to have a look at one of these units on display and be able to have a play.

 I am getting mine from

Wed, 2014-07-30 09:54

I am getting mine from campbells pro tackle.  I know bcf stock them on line, not sure about in shop.  Site sponsor Chivers are a dealer.  Not sure if they have any old stock left, but check them for the newer evo2 models.  I'm not going for the new model purely based on my budget because they are several hundred dollars more.  Chivers were very helpful providing information about the units.

Simmo Ryan - Not yet

We have only received one 9" unit for a customer so far, the store stock is on order and when they arrive we will put up a post to let people know.  Definately looks like a great piece of kit at this early stage.
