If you can handle it then go for it (if you really like it). If its too big to manage it will just sit in the driveway and hardly be used.

Dont compromise, get the boat

Dont compromise, get the boat you want. But 0.5 to 1 m too big for a 25 ft boat seems pretty trivial in the scheme of things......

dont worry about the size. Bigger is better, if you can afford to run it, go as big as you can for comfort, stability.

I was initially looking for a boat of 21ft or so, ended up 26ft!

I'd say 25 is getting to the realm of a big boat, do you need to be able to launch and retrieve solo? It certainly can be done but not always easily. Also .5-1 meter is a 22-23 footer, the 25 is going to be pushing toward a solid 3.5T, my 23 Cruisecraft is 2.56T with 50l fuel on.

The walk around style does cost deck space, for me it suits now as I can get my 5 kids sleeping in there comfortably for our Abrolhos runs, but I can see how it might not suit a day fisho. Costs go up exponentially with size.

Hey Jeffro,

Mate I'd look to a 21-22fter, big enough for Exxy to do whatever you want and be out there in most conditions.  25fter is just that much harder to handle and chews a heap of extra juice each time you want to go out and with you doing lots of trolling, you'll notice that fuel bill each time.  I disagree with bigger always being better, there's not much you can't do in Exxy in a solid mid size boat and if you can't do it in that, you don't really want to be out there anyway.

You might need to upgrade the old cruiser too Jeff , they are a big beast of a thing for a 25. Come round and grab our rig and tow it for a bit ;-)

Cobia

Wed, 2013-03-13 13:49

I was looking to buy a cobia a few years ago and they had very good reviews. Apparently they are a quality boat.

25ft is a big boat and would cause trouble to tow but I think it depends on the trips you plan on doing and what sort of engine it is running.

A 25ft boat will chew more fuel then a 23ft boat but the 25ft boat in my experience I have found to have more storage lockers, usually a few more fish boxes and a MUCH bigger fuel tank. If you are using the boat for big trips or extended time away then that larger tank becomes a great selling feature.

In terms of the fuel usage it will definitely use more as it is a bigger boat. If you split fuel between deckies or it is an efficient engine then the extra hurt is not so bad.

If you are not going to have an issue towing I would go the bigger boat personally. If towing is a problem then go the smaller boat.

Also on a sidenote I wouldn't really reccomend the idea of buying from friends. Always a chance that something could go wrong and sour the friendship.

Agree with Adam

I agree with Ads, you can handle a 21-2 footer on your own if you want to nip out for an arvo troll [like you do with your 19 footer] but once you start going too big and it creates more problems.

Does it need something bigger than your old cruiser to tow it, will it fit through the gate and into the shed, etc and more if you think about it.

Sure it gives a better ride than the 22 footers but then do you really want to be out there if it really turn to shit when if you were in a smaller boat you would be back at the ramp by then.

they are all really good point and some i didnt evern think about ,is the old girl going to tow it ?? i have been looking for some thing around the 6.5/7m mark and nothing real ticks the boxes just yep ??

bruce ,johnf and bodie im not to sure yet ,its a big step from the old 5.7m stacer to handle at the ramps ,my wife is not the best at the rope work yet and my 2 boys are 9 and 5 so they carnt hold it just yet ,but they are getting bigger

Ads,Dad   i do love those days after work and there is no chance to go to tandas for a quick trip,he carnt get it in or out under .8m of water over that side ,im starting to think 22/23 is a more doable size ...  but i would love a big boat

i still have no idea just yet ,i was all yes untill i got home and read all of these posts and now im not to sure ,it is a real BIG boat

thank you for all the comments

 as mentioned a 25 footer

Thu, 2013-03-14 09:23

as mentioned a 25 footer could be a bit too big. and as for your budget i would look at something that will leave a bit left over for any extras you might want to get ,like a new sounder with the 1kw for the deep stuff .blowing your budget on just the boat is not a good idea imo. there will be plenty of options out there and probably one that will fit your exact needs without the compromise.

We all want a big boat but its not always practical

25 Foot is huge, given its a trailer boat. Deckspace  Is invaluable if your into fishing. The boat i go out on has a cabin which u never end up using, Only for storage.

This may not be the boat for you.

Cheers
