Cheynes Beach - Boat Fishing - Questions & Tips
Hi all
Heading down to Cheynes Beach near Albany for a week at the middle to end of January with the family. I have a Ally 6.1 Ocean Sport Quintrex. I know it has no ramp and it is a hard beach in a protected part of the bay where they launch boats.
Does anyone have any experience or tips launching/retrieving a similar size or bigger size boat from the Cheynes boat launch area. I will be using my Prado 4WD and mackay drive-on boat trailer. Have a good sounder/GPS with navionics gold maps of area. Just want to make sure if the size of my boat will be a problem launching/retrieving.
Also looking for anyone who fishes from Cheynes from a a boat if they would kindly give me some general tips where to head out with my son to get to reasonable deepsea fishing ground. Same for or in close for squid etc if possible. Never fished this area before so any general tips - dangers to watch for - what to expect etc appreciated. PM me if like if you rather keep it off the forum.
If anyone is down that way around that time and would like another boat as company happy to go out with them-providing the launch site is suitable for my boat.

Cheynes
You will not have any trouble launching, however when you do, you cannot go straight out around the point as there is a reef, you need to head back down the beach past the salmon shacks, there is a channel of sorts that you can follow, once past the shacks you can head out, when you get past the end of the rocky outcrop turn right and head out to the island, you will catch some good fish including Harlequin, queen snapper and blue groper, you also get big blackarse.
If you are staying at the caravan park they are full of good info, providing the weather is good you will have a great time, it is one of my favorite spots to fish and if you want to go further off shore there are some huge pink snapper.
You will also see plenty of seals on the rocks around the island.

What a great place
If you're chasing squid, just in front of the beach ramp over the ribbon weed is as good as any. Nothing better than coming in there and topping up the Box with large fresh squid. I've never seen a small squid pulled in from there, all jumbos.
Cant say I've ever seen anyone get stuck yet but be sure to take some pressure out of your tyres (can be reinflated at the park) and take a snatch kit for someone else to help you. Joanne and Allan at the park are extremely nice people and as so you can sleep at night as they can rescue you (for a fee) if you get stuck. I rate their facebbokpage as well.
As a tourist I'm normally one to leave park residents in peace but as you go in the gate and turn right down the end on the left is an old timer down there that is very pleasant to talk to. He and his wife live for fishing and believe it or not there favorite target species is pike. I thought he was pulling my leg but one day I got onto a patch of "pick handles" and decided to give them a go. The fillets were firm, boneless, sweet and plenty of it. I think the key is to eat them the next day when the smell of their slimy skin is completely clear of your nasal passages.
Let us know how you get on, Australia Day has always been my favorite time of year down there along with the Salmon run.

great place.
Around the island , you can find somewhere sheltered to fish with the family. The south coast can be a bit windy during summer. One of my favorite places is the east side of the island, some of the biggest abalonie I have ever collected, lots of groper as well. hoping to get there towards the end of January myself.
