chasing large fish
Hi everyone, I have only just signed up to fish wrecked and was wondering if i could possibly get some help to chase a proper fish! I have only just arrived from the uk about 3 months ago and am based in rockingham. Been fishing off kwinana beach and been catching plenty of whiting, mullet and garfish which has been good fun. However i hooked something huge which spooled me i couldnt stop the thing!!! all good fun though and now i have a serious case of trying to land a big fish which resulted so far in spending alot of money in tackle shop!!!
Anyway i was wondering if anyone could give me some info on how and where i could catch big mulloway, ray or shark it would be greatfully appreciated. I wouldnt mind even doing few nights or whatever with people as i am new to the area and would be good to meet some people. I would buy the beers obviously! lol any help is appreciated! many thanks

Welcome aboard
First things first when you get a chance fill in you profile so people get an idea who there talking to..
Your in the right spot mate. Lots of good spots around rockingham, just hit a beach first thing in the morning or in the arvo as the suns going down, throw abit of burly out , old bait , cat food, oil, left over BBQ, to get the fish in to were you have your bait( hook), hope this helps

Heaps of rays in that area
Heaps of rays in that area mate. I was going down to palm beach boat ramp in rockingham last summer sight casting to 8-12kg eagle rays. If you've got heavy enough gear you should be able to stop them before they get out to the boat moorings.

ray fishing
Wow you can actually watch them and cast at them! im going have to give that a go. Iv got a medium sized rod loaded with over 300 yards of 15kg line so hoping that should be strong enough! Is it any good this time of year?

Yep you can see em. I was going down there to learn how to fly cast. Once I could get a fly out I started to hook them, used to lose a couple flys each session. Last time I was down there cleaning squids on tge shore a nice size eagle came around and was pretty much swimming around my feet, it got a bit hairy a couple times and had to jump up on the ski to get out of his way...

Has been a few good Pinkies caught around that area of the beach. Time on the beach and fresh bait, it will come together.

thanks
thanks for that info. I have been trying a few nights and not getting much apart from whiting (on lighter gear!). I have been using squid as bait. Is it worth changing?

g'day mate welcome to FW, If
g'day mate welcome to FW,
If you are catching whiting, mullet and garfish i would definitely chuck that on as live bait! or if not possible keep some and use them dead! fresh baits are always the best and using mullet, garfish and whiting whole should keep you away from most pickers!
Just another thing if you are catching those sort of fish you are in the right area, obviously something bigger has to feed on them!
Try that and see how you go, hopefully see a post of a land based snapper
Good things come to those who bait

rays
welcome to fw mate, there are rays everywhere where ive been lately, swan river, off beaches, north mole etc, if you are chasing rays i would definately say rottnest is the best place but watch out some people get cranky and swear, yell and abuse you, but theres supposed to be a fair few snapper hanging around its just a matter of finding them!!

what do ppl get cranky about? simply the fact your fishing on rottnest? I have heard it is good. Take it same baits for the snapper? (squid, whiting etc)

Hopefully next time im on here i shall have some pics to show!!!!!! One last thing though.... Do you need to be casting great distances for the larger fish from shore?

not always, it depends where
not always, it depends where you are fishing. By casting as far as you can you could be casting over a deep gutter or hole created by waves or current where large fish like to hunt. Or when fishing off the rocks for snapper it isnt always ideal to get your bait far out as the fish like to mooch on crabs and scraps at the base of the rocks. Always take note of the area you are fishing, the conditions and the fish you are targetting

Capture!!!!!
Would like to say a big thanks! last night i was fishing at rockingham and caught a shovel nose ray (i believe also known as banjo?). Not huge only around the 10lb mark but it was a very nice capture for me! probably wouldnt of caught it if it werent for everyones information as it took a fresh whiting. I cut the whiting in half and used the rear section as a cone shape! well chuffed and will certainly be doing that more often!!!!! Only problem no photo as guy who helped me land it put it back before i said i wanted a photo! Sounds like a fisherman story now!!!! anyway thanks for the info!!!!!!
