Buying a first boat

Hi all, i am looking at getting a boat and before the missis gives the full green light i need to do some research on running costs.

I am looking at a max of 6m long, Outboard min 50 on the back, and max buget of $15k. Ideally i want something with a small v berth and the majority of boats for sale are older models there.

What kind coin am i roughly looking at coughing up insurance and rego wise?

Also any tips on what to look for (especially engine wise) and what to stay away from would be greatly appreciated

Cheers

 Always insist on a thorough

Always insist on a thorough engine inspection, from a licensed marine mechanic. Do you want 2 or four stroke? 4 stroke area lot quieter, can be better on fuel in some models. 2 stroke are a lot easier to work on if you are that way inclined, generally cheaper to buy also.

I'd get on

I'd get on gumtree/boatsales/boatsonline

put in price range 10000 - 20000 on private sale boats

sort out the wheat from the chaff and research further from there.

you could get a pretty sweet boat for that

15k budget

If you can find something 5-6 meters for that id imagine its in the sort of condition thats going to need a bit spent on it for running costs / maintenance.

Best tip i can give is BOAT stands for Bang On Another Thousand - and thats an understatement

Good luck with it all mate

To give you some perspective

Here is a great 1st boat.

http://www.gumtree.com.au/s-ad/floreat/boats-jet-skis/5-6m-swiftcraft-explorer-half-cabin-tom-cat-/1002523503

Insurance and rego $600+ or - per year

Servicing, repairs and maitenance $1000 per year (Motor/hull and trailer) could be more or less

Running costs on that motor about $1.50 p/km includes 2-stroke oil - Carburated 130hp 2-stroke would use 1lt a km, but that yammi is a great motor

Don't let a salesman tell you that you are buying an investment either

 Hahah bring out another thou

Wed, 2012-05-23 20:39

Hahah bring out another thou biggest understatement ever I was in market last year with 20k budget, looked for bout 3 months at some complete heaps couldn't believe what people were asking. Eventually I made the decision to put up my budget to 40k (much to the wife's horror). I found that tHe boats between 30 and 40k were much better. Just for the record I settled on a 2001 7.2m wave blazer, I scored this for 43k put all new elects on (another 2 thou ) and thought all would be good. 9 months later full motor rebuild (another few thou). So my suggestion would be to find a mate with a boat and chip in for fuel !!!!! Save you thousands like it saves my mates hahhaha!

Don't buy a boat without

Don't buy a boat without doing an extensive sea trial, and get a marine technician to do an inspection on the hull and a compression test on the engine. Check out all your lights and electrics. And remember salesman can be convincingly dodgy!

Thanks everyone for the info,

Thanks everyone for the info, very helpful.

in regards to a sea trial would that be put her in the water and go for a put around (like taking a car for a spin around the block) or take her out and open her up for an hour so?

i saw this which looked ok http://www.boatsonline.com.au/boats-for-sale/used/trailer-boats/voyager-188-sports-cruiser/112409 and with the rego's and insurance would leave a bit left over for anything unexpected which hopefully wouldnt needed...

unfortunately none of my mates have boats so im not terribly knowledgable on all this so sorry if these questions seem a little silly

Thanks again

Yeah that link is a pretty nice boat, and yes sea trial means take it out, don't be scared to open it up to see how it runs under load, and be sure to get engine checked by mechanic
