Who thought, like me, that the track that great white took up and down the metropolitan beaches yesterday, closely resembled a breakfast diner patrolling the buffet table to see what's on offer?

i don't know that it is public access data, until fisheries decide to release it, but it is a fisheries research project, so maybe start at their website and see whats there.

was in todays news. and studys have showb sharks over 4m are basically harmless tp humans as their diets have changed fully betweeb 2.5-3.5m is when their jaw muscles change to suit their new feeding habits and during this time they are more likely to attack a human just because they are basically testing things out. but still id prefer seeing a little one over a 6m any day hahha

Big sharks
Disagree strongly my experience diving with sharks is that they have two trains of thought. Food & Self preservation. It's all risk vs reward for them. The bigger they are the less risk you present as a potential food source.
Run into some smaller 1-2m sharks and they are usually very wary as you present a dangerous risk for them to try and tackle, generally you'd have to provoke an attack.
At 2.5m - 3m+ you've become fair game but still a potential risk so long as you have eyes on them or a pointy speargun in the face. Especially at the 3m+ stage if theres blood in the water or they manage to sneak up on you they are probably going to try there luck or at least buzz you to see how you react.
A great white that's 4m-6m and you're nothing but a slow moving seal, doesn't matter if you keep your eyes on him you're not presenting as a dangerous target just a potential food source. All depends on what mood he's in and how you react. Anyone who's been approached by a great white will tell you how differant the feeling is, they approach with no fear and exude dominance. They are so confident there's generally no sign of that waryness smaller sharks have.
This is why when you see the guys like Andre Hartman freediving with whites before getting in he's looking for calm whites in a docile mood and once in the water you'll see him curl up to present a small target and then extend out as the sharks come in for a look to present a bigger target than they initially thought. It's enough to throw them off a little making them second guess.
To say sharks over 4m are basically harmless to humans is total madness, they are for sure the most dangerous.

Tigers
Have seen tigers come up with whole turtles as big as your dinner table and for someone to say that their jaw muscles have changed are in dream land or been scoffing too much seaweed.
Ads has a bit of footage from when I was fishing showing a huge dusky whaler at least a metre in diameter bitten in half with one bite. Would have loved to have seen or even caught it because it would have been bigger than any that I'd got before then.

I think its a good idea what
I think its a good idea what they are doing in tagging them it gives them more chance to close beaches thus reducing the chance of a shark mistakingly biting a person which unfortunantly sometimes results in death but in saying that its easier said then done as prefiously stated by some how often do you actually see them.

good idea
I am with ash, good idea to tag them and be able to notify the public an area like popular swimming/surfing beaches, never gonna be able to tag them all though. Also provides an insight for us all who are interested in their patterns.
I have to agree with boomer that sounds like a load of BS to me aswell

Shark sighting
I was lucky enough to see this beast on Monday just after lunch time just 500m North of Hillary's marina and only 250m off shore. It was casually swimming around under our boat completely undisturbed by our presence in 5m of water. I reported it to Water police and had a call from the Fisheriesto fill them in with the details but I would like to know why if this shark had been detected and sighted Monday why it was not made public until the media coverage on Tuesdat night. This shark had been up and down the North metro coast for 48 hours by then. There were a heap of people surfing Scarborough and Little Island on those days who were none the wiser until Tursday night.
What if someone was taken after this Shark had been confirmed in the area both electronically and sighted yet the public not made aware. I was told by the Fisheries they would advise Surf Lifesaving who send a tweet out to people on their list but surely a statement through the media would be more effective.

My family worry when i surf
My family worry when i surf two to three days a week. They worry about sharks but as i said you shoudl be more worried i could drown or get hit by another board, or my own.

Hmm, ok, so there's 20 sattelite receivers off the metro coast, and another 120 extending down the the continental shelf, but they have to retrieve them from the bottom of the ocean to get the data. Would love to know the exact locations of all receivers in the state, i reckon its in the best interest of all water-goers.
Does anyone know if there are any in the warnboro sound/cockburn sound area? These grounds have been attracting an awful lot of sharks lately. Obviously they are there, and they've always been there whether we've known it or not, but i would love to have technology put in place that can allow each individual human to be alerted of a tagged shark picked up by a receiver so we can all make our own decisions accordingly. For example if im anchored up on my kayak out at the D9 or something, i'd like my buzzer to go off signalling a shark in the area. (and yes ive seen the fisheries footage of the 5m white circling the D9 camera, so i know they're there).
We've got the technology, lets use it. People have the right to know.

Definitely do not subscribe to the "kill it" theory.
Agree that tagging / tracking is a good program to continue with.
Like the idea of an ipad / iphone app!
And what a great experience seeing it in 5m of water! Would love to see that! Seen tigers and bronzies, but never a great white! wow.
