Braid or Mono advice for Deep Sea Charter
Hi all,
So im going out charter fishing this weekend with a few mates on charter boat. Can anyone tell me how they been going on Mills charter lately... Looking at an overcrowed boat of about 28 people at the moment unless a few more people go and they may take both boats out which will be fantastic!
Have read some older post which states some dissapoiting things in regards to bait etc etc.... So have decided to bring my own bait. Also do they provide any good hooks or isit best to provide my own hooks. Being the first time i fish for Dhufish would love to be one of the first 6 people to catch one so i can take it home so as much help would be appreciated in preparing for the charter.
Would you also recommend using braid or mono in depths of 80 - 100 meters and what lb line would you recommend. Currently have a 30lb reel spooled with mono. Is this enough or am i going to be in trouble :/
Currently taking:
15-24 kg boat rod
2 x reel (1 spooled with 30 lb and the other with 50 lb)
A block of mulies
A box of squid
4 x Premade rigs with Gamakatsu circle hooks size 7
Anything else i may need? Would like to increase my chances to hooking something big. Was thinking of getting some fresh whiting for bait, but can't find them at the moment or if i do find them they are no bigger than 10 cm....
Cheers in advance.

You really want to be running
You really want to be running Braid for that depth, too much stretch in mono.IMO 30 Lb would be the lightest i would go.

If its your first time
If its your first time fishing that depth run 50lb braid .. at least if you stuff up you shouldn't lose the fish .. as for your small whitting definatly keep a few for bait .. even the little ones .. just snell 2 bigger hooks up top so you can put on whole squid or whiting

What reel are you going to
What reel are you going to use ?
Use just cheap braid .. Finn or something similar .. but the reel size is going to make a difference

For that size reel (depending
For that size reel (depending on model ) you might be better with 30lb .. if you live south of the river go see honsu at bluewater tackle .. its near oconnor I think

charter advice
you definitely want braid an i would suggest 50lb for a beginner. you will want to meake your rig out of say 60lb mono leader material.

some time spent preparing
some time spent preparing your terminal rigs will be time well spent. lumo squids above the top snellled hook. maybe a live bait rig .
If I spent half as long fishing , as I do reading this bloody forum , I'd be twice the fisherman I am.

Will top hook 4.0 be okay?
Don't have any 3.0 so used 4.0 for top hook, think that should be okay right ?

occy for bait
And my suggestion for charter boat bait fishing would be: Use skinned occy, Stays on the hook far longer, Saves you having to wind up 100m of line every 2minutes because the wrasse have pinched your bait.... Dhuies love good local occy!!!

Another option
Rather than respool your reel and if you like spin reels you can get a penn 850 for $100 fill it with 50lb braid and you will always have a reel ready to go for the occasion. My mates around gero catch heaps of dhuis on them. Alot cheaper/ tougher and versatile compared to some overheads around
Just another option

I have a 850 SSM
I spooled it only recently with 30 pound mono .
So didnt really want to respool it again.
Hoping for a horse dhuie :) if i get a bite! haha, if not will atleast attemp for something size!

50lb braid. 5/0 snells with
50lb braid. 5/0 snells with whole squid. if ur on mills then you will be packed on like sardines so fish on the bow, nobody like fishing up there (especially inexperienced fishos) only because of the steps to get there. they rape and pillage so make sure the deckies throw what you dont want back in the water

Thats allot of people crammed
Thats allot of people crammed onto a 70ft boat! Mills will make a good dollar out of that charter thats for sure but I wonder how many people will book their next charter with them? Would you even go on a charter with that many people onboard? As a few have said, tangle fest! And how many deckies will be onboard to sort the mess out?

due to the new set of new
due to the new set of new owners, whe know nothing about fishing. mills are a money making machine with no interest in fishing. they will keep sea sweep, sgt baker... everything. rape and pillage. zero return clients, its all 1st comers and tourists. they give charters a bad name. generally 2 green deckies btw truckie

With that many people on board get in early and tell the deckie you are running braid, so need a spot right off the arse end away from tangle city.
Good luck .

hey guys. I have been
hey guys. I have been keeping an eye down at the marina when the boats have been coming in, and from what i can see, Mills have been doing quite well lately. A couple of times they have bagged out on dhuies (6) and also catching a large number of good quality fish (Baldies, Black Arse etc). As for the numbers, yes tangles can be a problem on days when there is no wind (boat spins and tide plays havoc) but going by the forecast on the weekend, that will not be a problem. I am sure you will have a good day mate. People on here bag Mills out just because they are not a site sponsor, But the fact is they have the best catch rates out of hillarys and the 2 best skippers in the business doing the fishing (over 20yrs experience for one). As for the raping and pillaging part, all the muppets on here who like to bag charters out for raping and pillaging the ocean just because they spend all their money on fishing gear, boats etc and cant catch a decent fish just like to whinge because they want to blame the charter boats for their incompetence. The fact is charters have a bag/boat limit which they have to stick to (they are not going to risk their charter licence). So get a life you clowns and stop bagging out charters for trying to run THEIR business the way that they want to.

If you honestly think people
If you honestly think people on here bag out mills charters because they are not a site sponsor, then that shows how deuded you are.
Please support evidence to your claim, that their 2 skippers are the best in the business.

Its called catch rates
Its called catch rates overboard. And also skippers who can drive the boats properly (not run them aground on boy in a boat reef) like one of the site sponsors who you all rave about. Oh Yeah, thats right, I just bagged out a site sponsor. Watch how fast I get booted off of here. People just cant handle the truth, thats all. Like I asid, Bunch of muppets on here.

So you are telling me that,
So you are telling me that, because their skippers haven't run the boat aground and they return a high catch rate of skippy with 28 punters on board,
That qualifies them as the best in the business. Is that it, seriously ?
Who is the muppet on here ??

hmm, at no time did i say
hmm, at no time did i say they have a high catch rate of skippy. Yes, skippy can be a part of the catch, but not what they might target. Mate, at the end of the day, you can think what you want, im never going to be able to change your mind. I guess you maybe had a bad experience with them on one trip and that was that. I would never go out with blue juice either as I had a bad experience with them the one and only time i went out. And yes, if im paying the money to go out fishing, I want to be able to have confidence in the skipper to bring me back safely, not fall asleep at the wheel approaching the marina and run aground like this sites golden boy did.

never been on a local charter
never been on a local charter and never would, good luck to you mate. as for bagging mills... wont jump on the bandwagon but have seen a couple of previously mentioned charter boats out there and wouldnt rate them from what ive seen, also their conduct fishing fads and well known spots leaves something to be desired, bigger you are dont need to line up for the drift mentality is a bit alarming, just my opinion not really worth much haha i fish alone ;) pass the popcorn.
Here we go again.

well then andy, sounds like
well then andy, sounds like you have been out with them a few times then to know that they supposedly rape and pillage their spots and never find new ground. Its funny how they can keep going back to their same spots and continue to rape and pillage them time after time then. You really do seem to know a lot about fishing, dont you? Wait a minute, i guess you are one of the afformentioned muppets on here. so for me to expect any kind of knowledge from you would be just plain silly of me, and drag me down to your level of muppetness.

How is catching a skippy with the same hooks in its mouth as what you have on the rig you were given by mills and listening to the line "you should have seen yesterdayy" while winching your bait in with an alvey not fun?

The thing that makes me laugh
The thing that makes me laugh is they charge $210 per person so with 28 people on board thats $5880 but they only charge $3300 for the boat for a whole day charter so why not lower the number of people on board and run both boats so the punters enjoy the day out fishing instead of being crammed in like sardines, getting annoyed with the people next to you and lessening the tangled lines issue.
As for bagging them I personally dont care what they do I am just voicing my opinion which is the whole idea of a forum and now that I know they go out with 28 people on board I wont be booking with them regardless of how good their service is or how good their catch rate is but with 10 more lines in the water than most other charter boats you would expect a higher catch rate.

charter boat
say what you want guys about charter boats, but ive been trying to get a spot on any boat during the two weeks off ive had and they are all booked......they must be doing something right.
also tobefished, i normally fish crowded fishing charters with the largest sinker they got, they normally have a tub on the boat, on the way out politely ask to borrow a sinker and pick the biggest one. then secondly when they say 'lines in' when everyone drops thier rigs wait about 3 seconds and then drop yours, this way you avoid many tangles.
have a good day out
happy fishing

Totally off the original
Totally off the original topic, but if Mills fishes 28 people @ $210 while others are fishing 10 less at a similar price, then Mills has found a niche and are running a good business. The niche seems to be tourists and and one-offs. Fair enough. Few members on this site might be interested, but we're not their market. As a business owner, I wouldn't criticise them for how they run their show - they're probably doing better than others. As a customer, I'd go elsewhere like most others. I went out with Craig from Saltwater on Wednesday and we probably got 30 pinkies (including throwbacks) plus a few others and with only 8 or 9 on the boat (two were sick for the last few hours). He'll get repeat business from me and probably other members of this site. I think he enjoys his runs out more than the Mills guys would.

Why dont you guys ask
The skippers on here for a deckie spot
When i 1st join i was asked to go with 2 boats sometimes 3 a fortnight when weather permits
THat how i meet adam g on the 1st boat i went on abouttime,
Now i got agreat skipper [Steve] that iam lucky to fish with And i think [No i know we get on very well] And both put in hard yards fishing togeather
Fine a skipper that you get on with 1st, And do hard yards bein a deckie- and fine out what and how he likes things done around the boat
Skippers put alot of money into aboats which we dont see, So if you are lucky to get aspot work hard
By the way if a skipper knows his spots like steve, 1st friday of the openseason 19kg dhuie plus 3 others -2nd day 12kg dhuie and a 7kg dhuie plus baldie and other fish in the killtank
And i have not bein on a charter/boat for 15 years

Sorry Tobefished, it seems this thread has gone off course and seems to be charter bashing which I have outlined previously has gone too far. I have closed it for now, if you have any further questions, please post them in a new forum thread.
Also, to clarify, there are no site sponsored charter boats in the metro, golden or not barge arse, fishwrecked has no current affiliation with any of them. (members maybe, but not this site)
