boat sank off exmouth in wild storm on 19 may

yeah, as many have heard, I lost my boat on the night of the sunday, a long story so i wont go into it

we were camped out at Long Island, weather was pretty ordinary the week leading up to the event,

however we had a glass off day on the sunday 19th, fished the whole day, was even planning a night fish,

all that changed, when the weather changed, within 30 minutes, she was blowing 15knts, then 20 then a constant 25

wind changed direction, and the lee side of the island was no longer the lee side, wind picked up

at it s peak to 40 knots with wind gusts to 60, anchor didn't hold, and drifted away, refound new ground, and held fast

for around 7 hours, but not long enough to survice till the morning and had turned over

no damage to any part of boat, just would have copped some waves over side at some point,

weather turned extreme, no idea what the swell got to that night, but is was big,

Been an experienced boatie for well over 30 years, and knew the area and the safe anchor spots on the island really well

but given the lack of any weather forecast change, could never have anticipated what we experienced in the end,

By the sounds of some of the recent posts by some of you, there were a number of boats in trouble and gear lost

all around the exmouth region, I think we faired the worst, The guys that left the island that were heading to Broome

that got slaughtered several nights earlier, just wanted to let u know, this as well, as I know u lost a heap of gear

in that storm cell 6 days earlier.

Many thanks to Exmouth Sea Rescue who came out and got us and to teh group of 5 elderely guys on the island

who helped us as well. I got to say thanks to Fremantle Sea Rescue as well, who helped co-ordinate the initial action,

Have allways had a great respect for the sea and was well prepared, but she couldnt stand up to those winds

and conditions

Going back about ten years, there was a crayboat that broke its mooring at Leeman? and wasn't seen again until it was spotted on a mooring in Madagasca where it had drifted in one night, some 12 months later. A friend of the owner recognised it while on holiday there and notified him.

WOW!

Mon, 2014-01-06 13:40

just saw this, sounds unreal!

I remember this now, the inlaws were in the national park in Exmouth when this storm cell hit, and had water come into their caravan (over 500mm above ground). they found their gas bottles a few days later, they had FLOATED off a couple of hundred meters away into the scrub!

we rang them whilst we were in Gnaraloo, just as a courtesy call to see how they were. we didn't know anything about the storm, and we didn't even get 1 drop of rain where we were!

I was camped at Ningaloo Station during this and the wind and rain was intense!  No sleep that night, thought the van was going to blow over.  We were just off the beach wearing the brunt of it.  Would not of been fun out on the water, sorry to hear about your boat

I heard this story on 702AM

Mon, 2014-01-06 17:27

I heard this story on 702AM this morning. Amazing story! its been an interesting year for extreme weather. We got caught late April coming home from Glomar shoal. Went from being the best conditions possible, just heading to the shack for a few beers, to being hell on water - in the dark. Took nearly 6 hours to do 22 miles and I was driving the ass off the boat. Bloody scary.

Never wanted to not be somewhere so much!
