Best Plate Ali - 6.7M
Submitted by fat chance on Wed, 2017-04-26 08:17
Hi Everyone
After much negotiation, I finally have approval from the boss to upgrade the rig from a 5m Quinny to a 6.7m plate ali. Interested in everyone's thoughts on which way to go - currently leaning towards a Bar Crusher 670HT, but not 100% convinced.

had a Genesis
was quiet blunt , vastly improved now IMO value for money , what i have now cuts through the water nicely but a Biatch when drifting ,floodable keel imo is b/ s*&

Whats your budget? Something built by Moda is levels above all of the mass produced bar crushers/surtees etc.
Amm might be worth a look too.

New?
My thoughts-unless you have the cash to buy new, then select a range of boats and watch for 2nd hand boats.
The depreciation on a new boat is phenominal, the pain of the first scratch agonising.
Its the best time of year to look for a bargain and its a buyers market.
Patience and immediate access to the coin will save you a lot of money on that sort of purchase.
Be ready to pounce, have the ducks in a row and search online daily.
Give a man a mask, and he'll show you his true face...
The older you get the more you realize that no one has a f++king clue what they're doing.
Everyone's just winging it.

sounds logical, and what i have always done and thought was best. However....there is always that lingering concern about how that motor really has been treated, or has that trailer really been looked after or will the rust show next year.....was thinking that maybe this time it would be good to go for new and know that its been treated well from the outset, and make this a longer term investment.
if i do go that way, certainly not looking forward to the first ding....![](http://fishwrecked.com/sites/all/libraries/fckeditor/editor/images/smiley/msn/whatchutalkingabout_smile.gif)

certainly depends on what
certainly depends on what type of fishing you do.
to me Deck space is KING. can fish 4 easily on my boat and when a fish of a lifetime comes up on one side and everyone wants to see at once it's stable as a rock.
lots of travalling (deep drop/ trolling / bad back lol) you may be better with something like a crusher but if you want stability and room to move on deck something more like a genesis etc.

Mostly deep sea fishing and
Mostly deep sea fishing and deck space is the number one consideration for me. Somthing to fish 4 out of on the drift, and generally stable at rest.
Have always had ali's so willing to put up with the bashing, but hoping that a plate ali rather then a tinny smooth some (not all) of that out.
Any thoughts on the full hard top (single floor to roof structure) v's "semi hard" hard top (collapsable hard top, soft side and front clears etc)?

everyone is different but
personally I'm a fan of a "semi hard top" with clears if you need them. I take my boat up north a lot and love the openness. wind in my face but can duck the occasional spray over the shield if I want to. Full hard tops can sometimes get pretty hot.
again really depends on the fishing you do and personal preference.
bear in mind the smaller the boat the bigger the difference a full hard top will make to the movement of a boat at rest ....more weight up top gives less stability of course but with a 7ish metre boat will not make too much difference.
and also towing a full hard top can add a bit over the long distance in wind resistance.
not really sure about a collapsible hard top, my shed is high enough to easily back the boat in.

beware! happens all too often
not all boats in advertisement are measured the same way could well be that a 6.7 is actually 6.1m

100%True
I sold a 6m and bought a 6.4m. There is about 1.5m difference in overall length on the driveway and well over 1m of extra deck/cabin space.

Yeah, was caught by that over the weekend - the Coraline's have exactly that issue - advertise a 620, but claim its a 6.7M. I'm sure there wll be plenty the other way also

walkaround
I had the coraline 670 walkaround.
Loved the layout, but wasnt impressed with the ride in a followign sea (hence why it was sold), although they have changed the hull quite a bit on the new models.
The hardtop was awesome, and the walkaround really useful.
Next boat, I would like to go back to the walkaround. it has enough room for kids sleeping and dry storage while still providing useable access to the bow. With the high sides on the Coraline, very rarely took water over the front.

assassin
If i was in your postion( not gonna happen for a loooong time) i'd be looking at an Assassin 660 Dhufish. well made plate ali and just a beast of a boat. that's my dream rig but that's my opinion. don't see too many around second hand tho and a brand spanka is getting up there.

+1 for Stabicraft
I have the little 389 (4m overall) dinghy - for a small boat it feels like a bigger one in the ocean
positive floatation is nice for peuice of mind
the pontoons also allow for a much deeper vee which equates to better ride under way with the added benefit of stability at rest
beautiful quality welds, too

Redline
I've got a 6.1 Redline, built like a brick shithouse. Bangs a bit like all ali's but done plenty of big trips in it.
Pleasing thing was the quality of the welding, top notch in an out of sight.

Hey BJ,
Any issues with a following sea? My Genesis rides like a pig with a following sea, and the hull is the same as Coraline.
Thanks

No
Been pretty good Skull, in a big following sea though like in any boat, you need to be switched on.

Chivers Meridian
I love mine. Its a 6.4 Sports Cabin with a 150 Evinrude on the back. 2.48 m beam. Very good solid boat that is enormous for 6.4 m
