Old man arrived today and took him and my boys out for a crab sesh. Great day out with 3 generations on the tub.
They weren't thick in numbers but they were barries by Peel standards. Got more than enough for a fee had no need for the gauge today.

Great to see families on the water. What is it with kids and appetite as soon as they are on the water, you need to take a grocery bag of tucker for them.

Do you steam them whole or clean the first then steam them? I’ve been trying to get it right and found my best tasting ones were when I cleaned them first. I found when steaming them whole I was under cooking them or over cooking them.

I steamed them for 7 minutes
I steamed them for 7 minutes with the shells on and straight into and ice slurry but when I cleaned them they were still pretty raw so they went back on the steam for another 3 mins then covered in the ice chunks. Next time I'll clean them first so I can check.
I also chucked a whole heap of garlic and ginger in the water which went through the meat nicely.

I've got a huge pot I use to sterilise jarred chutneys etc and just chucked my steamer basket inside of it on a metal mixing bowl to keep it out of the water. I'm going to buy those huge aluminium ones they sell in the asian shops to make it a bit easier. I can't remember the name of them though, I think it may have been Eagle brand.

steamimg crabs
put a couple of inches of water in the pot ( sea water preferably ) when the water is boiling, put your crabs in upside down. When the water boils again, time them for 7 mins & take them out. leave to cool for a while & walla, beautiful, sweet tasting meat
