Albany Jigging Session
Hey all,
With the sambo season over before it started and squidding barely filling the gap i decided it was time to head south for a well overdue crack at some demersals today. I decided to give the local charter(spinners) as go.First up we trolled up a few Sbt's and stripeys on the way past bald head.
The Conditions were still fairly hungover from a week on onshore's so the skipper decided we would throw the pick over and anchor on a few lumps. This is something they do regularily down this way due the the Wind/currents and most fishing being done in 60-75meters.
First couple of spots were not too impressive, jigged blackarse+ one corker on bait and some of the biggest bakers ive ever seen + a couple of Red snapper on jig but nothing to write home about.
Next spot tony took us to a spot he has caught quite a few Dhu's on.I decided with limited sunlight the Fluoro Andaman would be worth a crack. My optimism rose slightly when Tony the skipper mentioned he had accounted for many dhu's on fluoro orange jigs locally himself.
So Dropped down and scored a solid hookup, the beat of a big paddletail had me calling Dhu.That was until about 20meters off the bottom it went on a very speedy run for the bottom but the stella had its way and somewhat confused i pumped the fish to the surface and couldn't believe my eyes when a Blue Groper came into view.In 75 meters on a coral bottom and on jig my day was paid for.
So was a great day out managed not to loose a jig to any leatheries and good to meet tony who is very passionate and has a great deal of good stories about his jigging in the great southern.
Cheers
Chris

Oh I see, nice one mate! Groper on jig is quite the accomplishment! As is not losing a jig to the leather jackets! Looking forward to getting down there for christmas myself and taking the boat out for a jig. Also spending a week there mid jan and plan to get out albany, walpole and maybe parrys/peaceful one trip.

that's the 2nd jigged groper
that's the 2nd jigged groper I've seen from down at Albany, and they're bloody good eating too.
Good to see the plan for beating the ban paid off, us Perthy's must be the butt of the joke for all those living outside the west coast area.
