Wreckless Pro Crayfisherman
Submitted by Ericl on Thu, 2018-12-20 06:46
Good things have been said in a previous post about a Pro Crayfisherman but unfortunately this wasn't the case yesterday.
Myself and 2 mates were pulling our pots south of the Northern leads from Ocean Reef when a Pro boat came steaming through about 40 to 50 sets of floats at the back of the 3 mile. He could have totally avoided this by travelling a few hundred metres further west, but he chose to steam right through the many Rec pots in this location. I would be surprised if he didn't cut any ropes !
Should this be reported to fisheries at all ?
Cheers
Eric

Yep
If it was me , yep I would have in a heartbeat , this is off just some general rules of the seas website for Australia , Im sure there would be similar ones in WA.
the part here about keeping a safe distance to a thing to not cause damage to it , would cover your experience.
A safe distance and speed between a vessel and a person or thing (including another vessel) is a distance and speed that will ensure that the vessel will not cause danger or injury to the person or damage to the thing, having regard to all relevant safety factors including weather conditions at the time, visibility, speed of the vessel and obstructions to navigation that are present.at

WE have had a 40-50 power
WE have had a 40-50 power boat drive straight through a 150m sailing start line whilst boats were lining up to start (less than 1m to go) in fairly light winds. Stuffed up a lot of boats and strained a few vocal chords.

Report him, interfering with fishing gear! If the tables were turned do you think he would hesitate in reporting you?

It is actually quite easy to steam through gear.
Steaming through gear doesn't mean you are cutting it off. Even hitting it doesn't mean you will, you need to really hit it with your prop. Or props--older twin screws with v-brackets were bad, newer twin screws are being built with twin keels, to protect the screws.
As for rope cutters, if you'd ever had to go over the side in 2m seas, under a 50 ft boat trying to bash your brains out, to cut off one of your own pots that has you immobilised, you'd understand why some fit them.

Chopping off floats or
Chopping off floats or showing the intention to do so could very easily be construed as interfering with gear ( if I can't pull my pot then it has been interfered with)... I like Pro's but that is just a dickhead and he is obviously not a responsible enough person to be fishing a community resource!

Where i have my pots there
Where i have my pots there are alot of pots now in a very small area i noticed yesterday that 3 of the pots around me have had their ropes chopped only leaving 1 float and messed up ends of rope this wouldn't have been a pro but somebody has definitely lined up a large group of floats and purposely run them over. When i pulled my last pot another rope was hooked on the corner of my pot i just flicked it off didn't think until now not sure if the other end was attached to a float. It seems as though a lot of people are doing it
rather be fishing

Ranmar is right
Ranmar is right above.
Driving through craypots is easy when you can see them given both the way they hang and keels as above.
If he had actually chopped any, your likely comment would have been that there was pieces of polystyrene everywhere but I dont see this.
No fisherman in his right mind would risk his stern gear in that way, I have pulled many shafts over the years repairing the damage caused by rope burning into the cutlass bearing.
A new 316 shaft costs upwards of $10-$20K before you even slip the vessel, Comsteel even more.
No rope cutter is infallible

Rope cutters good safety
Device. But hate to say it some use as a weapon. Seen it again today . They don't give a flying f@$k . Take them off I bet a $1000 bucks there would be more care taken. If you bomb your pots around a pro and your to close, different story your fault.

seen that pro boat fishing
seen that pro boat fishing the same area for about 3 weeks now, impressive how he turns that thing on a dime, manoeuvres in and out of the rec pots like a trailer boat. He’s bombed near our pots a few times, have had to wait for him to pull his pots so I could get to mine a couple times, haven’t seen him run over any floats, haven’t seen cut ropes on the surface either. Not saying he hasn’t, just my observation

, yeh , cant say i can see
, yeh , cant say i can see any logical reason why a pro would just run over and cut of rec floats ..from up above they can see what there doing and they usually do it well with precision
personaly iv never heard or seen of so many ''PROPPED'' ropes as the metro guys talk about ... more likly to be sloppy rec skippers at play than most pros ime
many blokes dont seem to be able to manouvere or keep a watch out for others gear ......

He also might have the sun in his face at the time, I have my pots north west of the lead lights and come back every day struggling to see floats and I dont have to look through a screen.

Whats the name on the boat
Whats the name on the boat LJ.
Eric said this fella was on the move, a few hundred metres to avoid pots/conflict is probably in his best interest.
It wouldn't have popped up on this forum if more care had been taken, I'm sure Eric wouldn't waste his time if he didn't think this bloke was being a little reckless.

Bit like the impatient twit
Bit like the impatient twit you see on the freeway using the emergency lane for a km to get passed everyone to the next exit. At least if he does hit a rope he'll be able to get Rob to pull his shaft.

To be fair to the emergency
To be fair to the emergency Lane user there could be a reason for that.
I know I've been tempted after a crash has held me up and I'm flying North for work.

The irony of this threads
The irony of this threads title isnt lost on me.
Wreckless in the boating sense is a very good thing to be applauded.
Reckless is not ...

Well spotted and a very interesting spelling error
It appears there is no such word as wreckless, however as you said wreck-less would be a good thing
