2018 crays
Submitted by merdel12 on Thu, 2018-11-08 13:55
So it's coming up to that time of the year. I've fished the whites the last 3 years and have done very well out of Freo. Any news on what state the Crays are in at the moment? Whens everyone dropping their pots in? I'll probably drop late November then start pulling in December. Hope the weather is as good as it was last year

december
I think there is a full moon late November / early December usually so will be getting out about a week after that when the shells start hardening.
Done well every year for the last 5, hope this year will be the same!
Cheers
I go boating not fishing

have the Anchormax winch for the Reefrunner, but not yet fitted, haven't bought a tipper, and I'm pretty locked up for work until I fly out overseas before xmas.

No crays yet
We have pulled our pots twice for a resounding zero from Ocean Reef. This time for the past couple of years has been traditionally very quiet, but when it hots up its pretty good. White run lasts for a couple of weeks at best in close. You can follow them if you have time on your hands and lots of longer ropes.

Lead rope
Or spliced leads into rope or snapper clip with lead 100 percent loose them. Could have been stolen. Pretty hard to cut them going at any speed. Floats push away. Rope follows. It's all about protecting whales lol. More like a multinova ( money maker). I've done it by choise ( leads ) have done for a while . Still hasn't stopped people in shallow water having 10 m off rope floating on surface , also in channels. I like idea only because it makes it safer when driving boat in dark. ( fishing trips).

Id say more like a pro
Id say more like a pro reversing over it, they jave potted all over me!
not sure why anyone would steal it, its a littler pot, single baiter old girl, not worth keeping and had my license engraved on it
i think some common sense needs to come into play with fisheries, ie; we always pot with the required rope for the depth leaving little to none on the service (floats bobbing). people who deliberately leave miles of rope on the surface should be held accountable, including the professionals. i took photos the other day with whole lines of pro pots with 10-15m of rope on the surface on each pot...

Agree Bodie
Shouldn't be made to do it. Should be people's choice. It's not going to stop whales getting caught up. That's a joke . Migration of whales no where near lines up with 90 percent of amuture potters.

Half the people out there
Half the people out there arnt following the rules anyway. Dropped my pots out there yesterday in the 20s and there were quite a few pots out with Line on the surface.
My biggest worry with putting weight on your line is its hard to tell exactly where someone else's pot is sitting due to the line going directly down and then running off sideways towards the bottom to the pot. When it gets crowded once these crays start running I can see alot of pots getting caught up on each other if there's a heep of spare rope down on the bottom.

No crays yet
Has anyone ever done any research on sea water temperatures and how it affects the cray run? I am told by a source that the waters of Ocean Reef are 4 degrees cooler this year (18.5c) than in 2018. I always thought that water termperature didn't vary that much.
Our tally 2016-51, 2017-23, 2018-0.
