Worlds shittest deckie
Took Tamara out for a fish today as the weather Gods are turning it on at the moment up here. Did well in finding some working birds, did even better at putting her onto a Wahoo about 1.3m long. Then things turned to shit. Got the hoo on board with high fives all round, spiked it and cut its throat to bleed it out then I fucked up. Had the ( what I thought was stone cold dead ) fish over the side of the boat and was bleeding it out when it gives an almighty kick of its tail and freed itself from my not so good grip and sloooowly glided off into the depths. No worries I'll grab the gaff and bring it back, gaff was too short ( now I know why people have stupidly long gaffs on board ) and the fish was gone forever. I contemplated jumping in after it and wisely kept my now blood stained clothes dry.
After convincing myself that this was a random one off event I got back onto the job of getting some fish into the boat. Ten minutes later a sold Spaniard was bought alongside.... Quick grab of the leader and a yoink to get it onto the gunwhale and grab its tail when it spat the Giant Trembler did a couple of flips on the gunwhale and it promptly went back to hang with its mates.
Faaaark me as Mr Rude would have said.
Moral of the story.
Use a gaff
Rope the tail when bleeding
We had a ball regardless of the shit that went down.
Weathers looking good for a chance at redemption tomorrow!.

Been there done that. Not
Been there done that. Not with fish like that but monster kg whiting. First monster Sandy went to measure it on the sticker which was just on the inside of the gunwhale and as she couldn't fit her hands around it properly it kicked and it ended up back in the drink ( it went 68 cm . One I did would have been 1 1/2 kg and as I was spiking it it slipped out of my hand and a couple of kicks later it was back in the drink.
Now I have the sticker on a a length of time and get put on the deck and all spiking gets done in a tub.
Good luck out there tomorrow. At least you can go fishing , none getting done in Perth area

Dhufish
My darling son Jeff was about 15 and went out fishing with a good mate.
Got himself a nice dhuey around 10kg, gilled and gutted it and as no icebox on board , stuck it in a wet hessian bag as we did those days.
Half hour later and the bag had dried out a bit so dear son decides to dip the bag over the side to wet it, gives it a bit of a shake and finds there is no bottom in the bag
Mate said he saw this silver thing heading towards the bottom and this larger thing swimming down after it, the silver thing won the race , with the chaser giving up after about 20 feet deep. Gave him heaps of ribbing about it for years and the lesson was learnt, never hang dead fish over the side to rinse them.

Redemption today
Long tail tuna safely in the fridge. Would rather smash a Mackie fillet any day of the week. Flip side Tamara loves tuna!.

jetty mulloway
Was down at the local during the week flicking some big plastics out in the darkness for mulloway when old mate down at the end of the jetty come up trumps with an epic fish on handline. Lip gaff and up onto the jetty, takes the hooks out, removes the gaff and starts walking back up the jetty towards his gear with one hand in the gills. One headshake and tail thump and before you know it the mulloway is back in the drink cruising off in just a couple meters of water for everyone to see. Doh.

Bloke I know tried to pull a
Bloke I know tried to pull a Tuna onboard a moving Cat ( sailing boat ) between Cape York and Darwin only to have the lure come torpedoing into his forehead.
Ended up with a one set of trebbles lodged in his eye brow and the other in his forehead, they had fuck all gear on board as it was a new build getting sailed from NSW to Perth.
Had nothing to get the trebbles out so they had to tape it to his head and sail to Darwin Hospital two or three days away...
The good thing was it was one of those lures that has the ball bearing in it, he spent the next three days on a rocking boat with torture taped to his head...
