Metro trolling is hard enough without a wire trace scaring the fish....we don't run any until we have lost a few lures. If you do run one, no more than 20 cm.
a full single strand leader was advised, but I changed to a short 30cm tied directly to a Mono/flouro leader.
Mackies up there would bite any shiny "thing" so even bronze swivel was attacked.
I ran a very long windon leader tied directly to braid (yes trolled with braid)without any swivel in the rig.
Down here I would probably even shorten that but have lost many many lures trolling for trout of Dampier when the razor gang approach, so if targeting them I always would have at least a little extra protection.
But never anything other than single strand. Haywire twist is easy and IMO better than crimps as they leave a bubble trail which Mackies will attack it they are on the bite.

Single
Unless you are going really heavy then generally single strand is best.

Not sure if one is better than the other but
I prefer the single strand so you can just twist to join rather than crimping the coated wire

Never run wire on my trolling lures and very rarely get a bite off.

Yep only
Mono down here, if you don't want to loose lures use wire but your strike rate will be well down

I only use maybe a 20cm length of single strand from my leader to the lure. Never had an issue with that putting off mackies.

Cheers for the advice ,
Cheers for the advice , sounds like mono ideal to get hits but risk of bite offs, or a short section single strand.
If I go mono what strength and is flouro worth using?
What strength single strand ?
Cheers
