Will the big ones turn up, or stuck in tiddler town?

 Hi all,

I wanted to seek opinions, or better yet facts, for fishing spots with smaller examples of the target species.
So if you were chasing pinkies with the whole burley and wait technique as an example, and you started to catch heaps of juveniles, would you be thinking "surely the bigger parent fish will turn up soon"? So basically if you were getting plagued by 30cm pinkies, would you normally stick it out and wait for Ma and Pa pinkie to show up, or from past experiences have you found they never really turn up, and you're just going to get plagued by the tiddlers for the rest of the session.

this question doesn't specifically apply to just pinkies, I'm sure we have all had times of northern demersals, whiting, herring, even bream being in plague numbers, but struggled to find the bigger models. So the question is, what's everyone's experience on "the bigger specimens turning up" vs the small fry just harassing your fishing session.

cheers

scano

With above comment. Except for things like herring or tailor.

Agree, every time ive got big

Agree, nealry every time ive got big ones there have been no small attacking baits. I fish with mulies for them and after dark they should be getting left alone (no pickers) until you get a big run!

Depends where

Depends on where you are, found out that in Shark bay, if you were getting small pinkies right next to the boat close to your burley then you would cast as far from the boat as possible and pick up the bigger fish

I know when we start getting

I know when we start getting hits from Red throat up north the bigger boys usually aren't far away. But damn it's a quandry down this way whether to move I've found from experience the bigger fish hang back until there is some excitement that get them fired up. I'd definitely persist.

In my experience, small pinks are absolutely no indication that big ones are around

No hard and fast rules, but

No hard and fast rules, but the small 30cm ones are no indicator big ones are close. Does depend a lot ob where in WA we are talking about too, places like shark bay I would fish night to find the bigger ones.

Sometimes around Perth the little pinkies are every ware and you're not necessarily on the good ground if you are catching small fish.

I think the 'No hard, fast

I think the 'No hard, fast rules' extends to fishing for Snapper full stop.

Was having this very discussion with a fisho colleague this morning. In the end we concluded you couldn't nail one thing that shortened the odds significantly.
Rigs (hooks, sinker, unweighted)
real bait v plastics
Dawn v Daylight v Dusk/night
Drift v anchored
plenty of berley, little berley, type etc
Depth
Month
etc
etc
etc

We had a good laugh at people we know "swearing" their method was the way to go....

 Been plagued by small pinks

Been plagued by small pinks off Mandurah before, big ones didn't show. Best sessions I've had are when the pickers disappear. In saying that, I'm a rubbish pinky hunter

Im talking metro 90cm+ snapper not the 4-8kg ones. Not sure how that rule goes for breeding snapper in the sound tho.

will the big ones turn up

if your going to burley, you have to stay all day, if you dont do any good try another area, next time, when you do get the fish you want, then keep a diary, month, time of day, tide, moon fase & so on, good luck cheers Don.
