which are the 6%
The Department‘s State of the Fisheries Report 2010-11 revealed that 94 per cent of the State’s fisheries are being managed in a sustainable manner. No additional management measures are required in those fisheries to maintain acceptable breeding stock levels. This compares extremely favourably to other fisheries in the world.
The Department is actively developing management strategies to ensure the remaining six per cent of fisheries also become fully sustainable.
The State of the Fisheries report reflects that Western Australian’s sustainable fisheries management program is backed by world-class research.
In addition, to the State of the Fisheries report, recently published results of a five-year joint study by the Department of Fisheries and Murdoch University, showed that fishing activity is having no negative impact on the aquatic food chain in Western Australian waters – a barometer of fisheries health and the environmental effectiveness of fisheries management.

Biased perhaps?
Of course Fisheries is going to say that 94% of the resource is being managed correctly...they're the ones who are managing it! They're not going to come out and tell us all what a crap job they're doing! But then again, what are the chances of actually getting an objective, independent, worthwhile study, from any source, that tells us whether things are ok or not? Every mob has their own agenda.

Not the Ab's
Abalone in WA would have to be one of the best managed fisheries out there. There are very few species that you can quite easily get your bag limit every day for the season, right in the heart of the metro area, and still have them there when the season opens again the following year.
