whats the greatest capture youve ever made or seen!!

hi guys i was thinking recently about the most memorable catches i've made in my life or fish that i've seen others catch , that were either caught on way too light gear or in gnarly terrain or just catching a certain species in shallow water where it should not have been, the best i've ever done was off koks island in carnarvon a 33kg spaniard on a floater on a stella 4000 with 300m of 20lb braid , that fish took me to the bottom of the spool in the first run and i held the spool with less than 10m left then after fighting the fish for 10 minutes and getting most of the line back it took off again and took me to the backing knot and it held!!! definately my all time best capture!, the best i have seen was my mate Ray catching a 17kg dhu on our first night fishing excursion near garden island , the only fish we caught for the night was his 17kg dhu in 7m of water on a bluebait and very light tackle it was awesome.   cheers

my greatest capture

Thu, 2011-08-11 15:27

wasnt on light line but i class it as a great capture! it was a tripple header of red emporer on 50 pound line using a standard paternoster rig with two sets of two hooks! bottom fish wieghed 9kg and had a double on the top set weighing 6kg and 4 kg! put up a hell of a fight and put me over my limit in one drop!

Hooked and landed a 68lb cleaned spaniard on my own off Whistling rock, mate couldn't help because he had already hooked up on a massive GT about 15 minutes before my hook up. Took him 3 cans to land it on an Abu 10.000 with 30lb line. [ also drank 3 x cans while the fish was on ]

Others include double header of 40lb + dhuies off Naturaliste, 62lb clean mulloway on 15lb and a couple of tailor that went around 6-7kg.

We had a triple hook up on sailfish a few weeks ago in Coral Bay with the crew from Chivers Marine and Navico. Not a capture but still the best fishing experience I've ever had!! But we did have some great captures

Thu, 2011-08-11 17:16

This thread makes me feel sad.

I've been fishing my whole life and caught many thousands of fish. But nothing spectacular. Plently of good fish. But nothing that stands out as an amazing capture.

I've caught an ~8kg mulloway on 6lb mono and a bream lure in about a 10m wide section of the upper canning, that was pretty cool, but not really spectacular since they grow about 4 times that size.

Mulla on 6lb

Thu, 2011-08-11 22:13

I don't think the biggest fish i've caught is the best i've landed. 8kg mulla on 6lb is a nice capture mate .

My first fish was a small whitting at Kalbarri with my grandfather , I was three years old and still remember it like it was yesterday.

After that i was hooked and have fished all my life since that day 39 years ago .

Cheers Grant

PS Tailor marc = Sailfish from Steep Point was an awsome capture for a young fisherman. I have shown alot of friends the youtube clip and it is unreal.

Thu, 2011-08-11 17:26

A few stand out, best would be a +100kg black marlin caught on 24kg stand up in a 519 stacer on my first ever attempt at chasing them.

Close second would be a cobia estimated around 15kg caught on 9kg mono that followed up a small charlie court then nailed it as i dropped it back down.

Last but not least would be a 5kg tailor caught off the rocks at quobba, the tackle wasnt overly light but the fact it was a small long shank hook tied directly to the 12kg mono and the fish buried me around a reef ledge twice made it a great capture.

Mine would be a 12lb Barbel

Thu, 2011-08-11 17:31

Mine would be a 12lb Barbel from the river Trent in water that (according to the "experts") was too cold for Barbel.

Another would be getting 2 pb carp 14lb then 17lb the day after my vasectomy. The pain when playing & landing those two fish still brings tears to my eyes even though it was 12years ago.

Got a 40kg Black on 6kg line last year at Mackerel Islands.

Favourite was probably the size Baldy on 2kg Herring rod at the Abrolhos under one of the jettys. I was around 16 and if you know the area and pylons you can appreciate how much of a feat that was.

Thu, 2011-08-11 20:29

Every fish I catch is great , I have caught big fish both here and in Ireland, whats spectacular is watching my little bloke catch a  fish and seeing the excitement in his eyes as he lands it and then releases it so we can catch it again when it gets bigger.

Hi guy's, new to the forum, been reading for ages though, best most memorable catch would be a 26.5kg Mulloway on 20lb mono from ASI a few years ago, which took 7 minutes to bring in cause I thought it was another ray and was expecting to bust off.

mine is in dongara with 5

Fri, 2011-08-12 10:00

mine is in dongara with 5 guys set up all the big mulla gear fresh tailor fillets, Mullet fillets, slimmy makeral, Yellowtail, lives we had the works out in the water. Then some lady came down with a jarvis walker special that she said she just bought! with a running sinker with a long shank hook, the hook was in the middle of a mulie that was not cut up it was put on whole me and the boys pissed ourselfs laughing watching this lady cast it made it maybe 5m ( this would turn out to be a mistake) she didnt even know to flip the bail larm back over and sat on the beach with the rod tip pointed towards tne water. she would not of been there longer then 5 min just as the sun was going down line started peeling off the reel. as she tried to reel it in the bail larm clicked over and pulled the rod out of her hand and went down screaming down the beach! when she caught back up to it she held it pointed the tip towards the water and just cranked the reel so me and the boys decided to go and help, long story short in about 20 min and a lot of yelling a 23.5kg mulla sat  the wash we gaffed it for her and for the rest of the night we caught nothing

Fri, 2011-08-12 10:09

Not a big fish but an unsual capture. I once caught a good sized crayfish by hand with no goggles  in while having a swim at Scarborough beach in waist deep water early one morning. It was right in the middle of the beach with no reef for miles. Must have been lost but it tased good.

The memories of fish caught

Fri, 2011-08-12 11:22

The memories of fish caught and the areas travelled are great things to think back on!

A few of my faves are a 4½lb bream on 8lb line from under the narrows using garden worm as bait.

catching 5 small (up to 15kg) hammerhead sharks in an 1½ hours on 15lb line off the rocks east of Albany.

my pb dhuie of 21.6kg on a night fish out from Mandurah. (This being overshadowed by me mate whom on the following trip scored 2 x 20kg+ dhuies in 2 drops!!)

One of the more memorable 'double' captures was a sergeant baker caught with the sinker through his mouth and out his gills. Not once, but 2 diff bakers on 2 successive drops caught in the same way! (Great dhuie bait!)

One of the most memorable events seen was drifting in the middle of a massive pod of dolphins off Ningaloo, when an inquisitive massive whale decided on coming over to join the fun. He was heading straight for us, surfaced for a breath about 10m from the boat and dived enough to miss us by only 5m and went just under the keel. The boil of water rocked the boat plenty, with the three of us on board feeling insignificant in size, but enthralled and thrilled all at the same time!

Maybe I should change my online name to SMF-SLT.  (So many fish - so little time!)

This thread makes for good reading thanks evyone!

a few for different

Fri, 2011-08-12 11:39

a few for different reasons

For pure arse: I was walking a beach staring at a school of gardies w'ed burlyed up and i had my rod with a 3 gang on it, i bet my mate i could jag one and use it for bait so i swiped the big three gang through the water and jagged one on the end hook in it's mouth! 4/0 gangs too.

Pure persistance: I must have fished Karratha's back beach nearly every weekend for 4 years throughout highschool and the best we had done was small doggies macks at high tide, the occasional big golden trevally and then as the tide dropped we'd have a 1 hour window to get a blue salmon for dinner, one day while chasing the salmon which we became very good at catching my line bolted off the reel and we called it for a big ray or shark but not this time i pulled up a monster 1.2m Giant Threadfin from 1m of water, biggest one i've caught since too

Pure Sporting Fun: 68cm Spango on 15lb braid and a bream combo off the shoreline, 11.2kg queenfish on 8kg line from a homemade popper as a 15 year old. 70kg plus bronze whaler on 10kg line from Karratha Back Beach, took me 2 hours to land without a gaff, thank goodness for the outgoing tide.

Pure Favourites: First Barra 92cm on 6kg line and a SP, what a buzz!!! and my first marlin on Lastchance on the day before the comp, still got the buzz from that one

Fri, 2011-08-12 18:19

Ahh many memorable captures but one that sticks out was on a trip to the Monties with the boys, nightly ritual of Pissy Poker about to take place on anchor we lobbed out a mackie head & started playing cards. I don't even think the first cards had been dealt & we locked into a mammoth battle with a big Tiger Shark pissed as farts going hell for leather tag teaming this bruiser for over 2.5 hrs & fought ourselves sober.

Quick pics, back slaps, hooting & hollering then back to the cards

got a few favourites that stand out amongst the rest.

My first mulloway. weighed 19kg, caught on an old mullie.

Fishing off of exmouth i got a sailfish on a floating gardie, wasnt massive but it was my first billfish and too catch it on a dead floating bait was pretty special.

Best capture ive seen would have to go to the 12 yr old girl that caught an 800 pound marlin. took her over 2 hours to get a tag in it.

was involved with a couple of fellas who hooked and landed a sailfish at the tubes. Yep land based on a yakka and 15kg gear. They were stoked to say the least. There was another one swimming with it the whole fight until it was about 15 metres from the rocks. He kept the fish, and I dont blame him. I would have as well

capture was while out squidding, thought I had a good squid on to only find out it was seaweed, started to get the seaweed off and saw something move in it, quickly pulled it apart to see a beautifull little sea horse in it, old fart thought it was beautiful, so we gently put the seaweed back in the water with the cute sea horse.

Think I had two great moments.

Went fishing off of Nobby Head, old fart pulled up on his spot and down lines, next minute, I started to  burly, settled down and went agian and again.  Thought I'd just sit for awhile line in hand, next minute got a big tug on the line, old fart screams you'e got a fish, winding up, burley, winding up and I got my first, burly up, legal dhuie, I was so proud, burly up, the next day my rib cage was so sore, my throat was burning from bringing bile up, but at least I got my first ever dhuiefish through thick and thin I was bringing it in, that day we got 4 nice big dhuies, that was 13yrs ago.

Double hook up, single hook

Sat, 2011-08-13 16:55

One that stands out for me was on a charter on my first ever trip to exmouth. It was a another small framed girl on the charters catch not mine.

We were trolling back to bundegi from west of the murions and this girl was up for the next fish, anywho the next fish hooked up and this poor girl got strapped into her gimble and began to fight her fish that was taking forever to get in, after about twenty minutes with a red face and the usual domestics that happen when boyfriends and girlfriends are giving each other advice we finally got colour... ah the fish is hooked backwards! no wonder! an 8 kilo big eye tuna, pull the fish in... wait where's the lure? in all the excitment the tuna had entangled itself around the tail somehow in the main line about 20 meters up from the lure, the deckie untangled the fish only for the rod to go off on another blistering run as the girl realised after all that she'd only won half the battle, with the girl about to drop dead she kept going and landed her next fish of equal size catch of the day, All the boys were very quiet for the trip back in, all outfished by a little queensland girl, hell she didn'teven need hooks to catch fish! two fish one lure

When asked by a non-fisherman 'how many fishing rods do you really need?' the correct answer is either:

n+1 (where n is the number of fishing rods you currently own); or

n-1 (where n is the number of fishing rods which would cause your significant other to dump you.

Best

First fish on fly - A mere herring but just to master that was a memory. After hrs of practice looking like a dill in the Park.

Best capture, certainly a 10odd Kg GT (released fast - measured quickly on boga grip) on a 8wt Fly rod. Poor bugger was very tired after the battle. Man it pulled like a bulldozer, and luckily there was no reef etc to bust me off on. Wasnt trying for something that big. There was a stack of smaller brethren and queenies that I was targetting, but the bruiser got the clouser before the little uns.

Most memorable - My father catching my inner thicg paddling a live bait in a bucket out to the channel in Morgan's bay South Africa. Trying for Cob (Mullaway) but to far to cast so the youngsters paddled the livies out. His overhead backlashed and the Mullet in the bucket between my legs jumped out, impalling me lightly mid inner left thigh, scrapping a line and finally burrying itself about 4 inches away from the future family jewel. I was back paddling like mad by then!!!!

Also the Mrs first Mackie on the day she first met my father in Kalbarri. Tried to Tailor drag it in (which she was good at), only for the well known blistering mackie run. "F*ck" she said, and then about three more times. My father turned to us and jokingly said, "Well now we know how to get the foul mouth out off her". We all pissed ourselves laughing after that.
