What do YOU want for recreational fishing in the next term of Government?.

The WA State election is due in early 2009. Some people are betting the State election will be in late(ish) 2008.

The political parties are probably working on their election promises.

Those would cover the four calendar years from 2009 to the end of 2012.

Now's a chance to say what you want for recreational fishing in that 4 year period.

Some details and reasons and priorities and supporting info would help with putting the final list into some order.

Go to it.

Here are some references to the promises which were made for the 2005 WA State election.

What do YOU want for rec fishing in the next term of Gov't

Wed, 2008-03-26 09:18

What??

Doesn't ANYBODY want ANYTHING added, removed, changed or improved for THEIR recreational fishing???

This list will be very easy and very cheap for the political parties to deliver.

No recreational fishing licences

Wed, 2008-03-26 10:23

While it may not affect the dedicated fishermen much, I can see that occassional anglers may think twice about going fishing and that would have a significant affect on tackle shops, etc.

I read recently

Wed, 2008-03-26 10:46

I read recently that there were concerns that some of the parties behind these proposals have not done an assessment on the size of the recreational fishing industry and its turnover in relation to the community.
If that is correct, than that would be a major concern.
I agree with Marc's input. Some new fishing platforms would be great.
As an aside to that, it maybe a good idea to have information notices put up at the fishing platforms around town providing information on catch limits, disposing of rubbish, removing old fishing lines, etc.

I once chatted to an old bloke fishing off Whitfords Point about a disabled access platform on the Southern side of Hillarys. Apparently the Marina and local government have already done a costing for it...

Maybe something substantial to go with all the work they have done in that area of late.

Would be a good tourist attraction too given that it would be pretty much smack bang alongside the entrance to the main carpark.

By the time i'm 70 odd they may have somewhere like that for me to park my zimmer.

Excellent

Wed, 2008-03-26 11:32

I like your thinking Marc.
I will apply for the first bait store licence on the metro end.

Anyway, with all the talk about rising seawaters, my roof will provide a pretty good fishing platform when the ocean starts pouring down Reid Highway.

What do I want?

Wed, 2008-03-26 12:47

More money for policing and enforcement plus better education on bag, size limits etc.
Boat anglers to pay a license (optional) as an add on to their boat rego, without it you can't catch category 1 fish. Proceeds go to aforementioned enforcement and education.  I don;t mind paying as long as I know its going to be going to the right areas.
The high risk demersal species such as Dhuies are only caught by boaties (with very very few exceptions around the S Bend etc) so that is where the focus needs to be placed. Spreading the load too far means minimal impact where it is needed, or even worse, the non dhuie shore based fishers subsidising the boaties.
Every fishing platform and beach should have fishing regulation signs posted in at least 3 or 4 languages.
All packets of bait should also have warning signs on them about bag limits and size limits, with the fishwatch number also printed on them. (just like cigarette packets do) No ignorance excuses then, like "Me no speak the engrish"
A program should be commenced to educate high school students, as they will inherit this mess in years to come and also are a very strong leverage point to help change the ways of their parents, who perhaps are stuck in the "I have a right to kill whatever I want" mentality of the early 70's and 80's, when it seemed inconcievable that the fish population wasn't an infinate resource.
A concerted effort to establish empoundment recreational fishing for larger species than trout and redfin. Take some of the pressure of the ocean and help spread the rec load. I have a barra rod sitting in the shed not getting any action, so I guess if I had a place to use it I might not go offshore as much.
There you go, a few off my chest.Wink

Cheers

Andy Mac

Got some great ideas there Andy

Wed, 2008-03-26 21:26

There will be change...we all expect that.....it’s just a matter of being sensible about the whole thing. Boaters are the major extractors so they should bare the cost of "management".Have no problems with a bottom bashing boat registration or demersal licence...revenue placed with a Management body...separate from Fisheries - who are good scientists, poor police. You want fishing platforms.....you might need to pay to walk on the beach in the future Compliance is expensive (without a licence) so education is the only real way (cheap) to change people’s habits. Bait bag idea is a cracker. Hypothetical Say if in the future there was this Fishing club you could join which pretty much guaranteed quality fishing on tap when ever you wanted to go…..obviously to be successful it would be managed like a top 10 Blue chip company. requiring a fee for service. What would you be prepared to pay???? Most of you blokes are members of Recfishwest.....

What I want from the next election is more funding for fishing.....lets seek the truth

It really is about education - and that works best if you can educate the youngsters.

That's why Recfishwest is so involved with Fishing Clinics for children see http://www.recfishwest.org.au/FishingClinicPage.htm

Many more fishing clinics are run, but writing them up for the web site and getting permission to use photos of the children takes a great deal of time which just isn't available with current restricted funding and resources and work priorities.

I know that Recfishwest does what it can under difficult circumstances.
Have you considered the possibility of making some sort of arrangement with the West or the Sunday Times to have a fishing education column run alongside their weekly fishing pages.

Info on bait bags

Thu, 2008-03-27 08:11

Andys idea of printed bait bags that have rules and regs on them is a great idea. No excuse when people get caught with to many or undersize fish.I dont like the idea of any more charges to go and have a fish though. With every day stuff going up and up. With insurance, rego, services etc on trailer and boat it cost enough. Agree with the whole education idea and starting in schools is a great start as that age group are the future of fishing.

Rules mean nothing if

Thu, 2008-03-27 20:28

Rules mean nothing if there’s no one to police them. I do think peoples mentalities are slowly changing, but there is still a lot to do .Bigger fines and harsher penalties for those caught with undersize fish or over bag limits, confiscation of fishing gear and boats until fines are paid if not paid on time sell the lot this would discourage them next time. A bit harsh but some people get away with blue murder and learn nothing from the pissy little fines they receive, the only one to suffer from new rules will be the honest fisherman, the rest will just do as in the past (what ever they like )..
