Wanted - Best Casting 40 - 50gram lures
Submitted by timboon on Mon, 2018-10-22 20:31
Crew I want to send the old man some lures but as i've been out of the salmon chasing game i'm out of touch with what is the best casting lures out there...
I must stress, looks come a big second to casting distance...
Where he fishes you need to be able to punch them out there to a small area often into a head wind otherwise you come up short and wont catch a thing...
Any help as always is appreciated....

Halco use to make some long
Halco use to make some long casting poppers not sure if they still do. They might be heavier than 50 grams though.

The jackson range of sinking
The jackson range of sinking bibbed minnows are amazing as well. Tackleworld stock them. Great lures with a nice tight shimmy on the retrieve.

Raiders
Any of the raider range, I prefer the bigger ones that you can belt into a strong wind without too much loss of casting distance

Cheers fellas i'll do some
Cheers fellas i'll do some home work...
When all else failed we used to cut the big barrell sinkers in half then scratch the side of em with a 20cent coin to give them some flash, always found it was far more important to get the distance rather than the fancy look...
I'm suprised more "salmon" lures arent designed for distance casting.....
Anything shaped like a projectile going backwards will cast!

Press baits and Smiths lures
I haven't used a wide range of lures, but I've had some superb fishing with using the Smith's Saruna Dragon lures. I prefer the sardine coloured one in 125mm 37gm for med-lge salmon or tailor.
For big tailor/salmon, even tuna, I would back Press Baits in 175mm, 50gm.
Smith's also have a 10cm 40g lure called a Surger that I am going to use on my next trip North, but I believe they are very good.
The above are all lipless minnows, so they cast really well, but you've got to twitch them about a bit due to the absence of a bib. It's often when you pause then quickly retrieve that you'll get hit.
I generally go to Compleat Angler in Nedlands for the above lures, possibly other stores for similar types of lures.
