VHF advice needed
Submitted by tango and cash on Sun, 2008-11-30 18:07
I am looking at buying a VHF radio for my new boat. I am looking at the Navman (Northstar) but am not sure if I need one with DSC? If I buy one without DSC will it become defunct like the old EPIRBS?
Also I take it I need to buy a antenna seperatly, any advice on this?
Cheers

Sam don't think you'll need
Sam don't think you'll need dsc , put quite a few radfio's in boats and pulled a few old dead one's apart and seen the salt damage internally . Think the best value unit is the gme 600 had mine for three years now and now problem . Seen quite a few no name brands of the net and basically you get what you pay for . Aerials will be a specific vhf unit and i think that gme are selling packs at the moment with them included
I wish I had an emo lawn so it would cut it self

Hand held
Have a look at hand held also as an option transfer from boat to boat also store away out of the weather and reasonable price.
Just a thought.

I've heard the navmans are
I've heard the navmans are at least waterproof, but the GME units arent. I'm hoping mine lasts a bit longer, YMMV!
