Undersize Mulloway

Gday,

Over the last couple of months Ive been catching heaps of undersize Mulloway..........probably about 5 undersize to every size.

Does anyone know roughly how long does it takes for a 30-40cm mulloway toreach 50cm?

Cheers

A long time if it's not released

Mon, 2011-12-12 17:18

IMO even a 50cm Mulloway should be returned. They are referred to as "soapies" for a very good reason. Good fun for sport but not that good for eating. Once they get up to around 70cms then you have a great table fish.

I will release any mulloway under about 9kg. smaller than that, I dont find it worth it.

Perhaps you better read the question again Fat Boy

He asked how long they take to reach 50cms. Not 70cms. Another answer I could have given was 20cms LOL so dry up mate. Sometimes posts here can be in good humour and not to ridicule the post for malice (if you can understand that).

hi mate, i wouldn't have

Mon, 2011-12-12 18:24

hi mate, i wouldn't have thought that mulloway (Southern) wouldn't have too slow a growth rate, i'm sure someone will correct me if i am wrong but if they were really slow growers like black bream then they surely wouldn't be a viable aquaculture species, link below states that 2yo fish average 46cm and 5yo fish at 80cm and 8kg, black jew (northern mulloway) have a fairly fast growth rate (in the NT atleast), 60cm in the first year and 90cm by the second year

SA primary industries and resources, not sure if captive fish or wild tho

slow down a bit guys...geez.

Hairyone. Good to hear you are getting amongst them. Altho somewhat small.

It's a good sign I reckon for the future when we see lots of juvenile fish about.

Anyway back to your question. About 12 mths from memory should see them about 50cm.

Good luck

I posted on this a couple of months ago and its probably of interest

http://fishwrecked.com/forum/mulloway-spawn-size

I They are currently breeding them in freo tafe, They are going to implant the little bones things in their heads with a particular colour relevent to where thay are released in the wild so they can identify where they go and where they get caught

according to that study i posted in that thread, it takes a south australian fish around 3 years to get to 550 mm. And then mature at around 850mm at 5-6 yrs

But the question was 300mm/400mm to 500mm. Interpolating championruby, I would say 12 to 18 months

simple question

Tue, 2011-12-13 16:29

simple question hey, its funny how some people cant read! look at page 66 on that document there is a graph that spells it out.

What you will notice is that the fish grow at individual rates due to alot of different factors including enviromental conditions and gene pool.  This study was done for south australian mulloway and wont be exactly the same as west coast mulloway. So as stated above by championruby and davmor a fish of 500mm should be around 3 years old.  If its growth rate was steady it could grow around 150mm a year in the SA conditions, if those conditions are roughly the same in 12 months these fish could be around 500mm

Thanks fellas.....I had heard a few people commenting on how next year will be a good year for Mulloway if all the juveniles we are catching is anything to go by,and made me wonder if they grew that quick.

Uncuttriggerinwa.........Im not sure what makes you jump to the conclusion that I keep 50cm Mulloway, but just for the record, the majority of the legal size Mulloway I catch are around 90cm.

Thanks for the link Rig.....just what I was looking for.

Cheers

Oh Leemo. Remember mate you work in the tackle industry and I have bucks to spend. Tame yourself mate and don't splatter idle crap around the place. I go fishing often. Just not with you.
