under floor - Fuel sender unit problems

Have had a dodgy fuel gauge for a while - so I ripped up the hatch in the floor and replaced the compete sender unit -

When you power up the unit to test it stays on FULL and when you move the Float level arm Manually  it moves from FULL to OVER FULL!  - I read somewhere that if it is not earthed properly it can read Full all the time . Checked that and its still the same .- Any Ideas ?????

Test it with a meter

Tue, 2010-10-26 20:00

disconect it and put a test meter across it it should show a gradual difference in resistance from empty to full but I dont know exactly what the parameters will be if you see a gradual change then the problem is not with the sender...is your guage ok?

Resistance !!

Could be an easy one and sounds like your gauge and sender are not matched ie the resistance of the sender sweep is not in scale with the gauge ...

Check to see if the sender

Tue, 2010-10-26 20:35

Check to see if the sender unit is for the model of dash fuel gauge. If they are not compatable then it will give you a different reading as what you seem to be getting?

If it is compatable then check the wirring because it is sending to much voltage back to the guage. The sender unit just gives resistance to electrical current for the guage ie. less resistance the guage reads full, lots of resistance the fuel guage reads empty.( don't want to get confussing but same guages read the opposite to resitance as what I have just mentioned)

Hope that helps?

check the ohms

check that you have the matching brand sender unit but most important the ohms reading is matched or it will give you false readings

sounds like it isnt matched
