Tiagra combo

well i have worked hard for the last couple of weeks and managed to get $1000 over 6weeks of work and my dad said hes gonna buy me a shimano tiagra 24kg game rod for my b-day as an ultimate trolling combo for marlin and spanyards. I was wondering if the Tiagra 50W is a good reel to match it with as i have been saving up for the last few weeks after doing some reaserch on the different reels and thought this would be the best one to match the rod with so can people tell me their thoughts on the reel and if anyone has one can they tell me about their performance.

Cheers Mike

well with a reel and rod like that you are going to have a quality combo thats for sure, i wouldnt worry abot much else, i prefer penn inters my self but many many people have the tiagra's and like all reels regular maintenace and servicing will have you using it for mny years to come, good job on the saving tooWink

Marlin

Fri, 2008-06-13 23:23

Well im planning to use it on Marlins when i can get the chance as me and my uncle are keen to fight Marlins and with our new boat it makes places like the FAD's easily accesible compared to the dingy

Too many fish, not enough sickies.

tiagra

Sat, 2008-06-14 03:43

if you have the coin then get a tiagra for sure, all the top game boats around the world are using them so they can't be that bad. I use the 30 for game fishing over here with a 15 kg rollered rod and nothing has stopped it yet.

Saying that we also use the ocuma gold 30 on the same settup and that has been faultless and smooth also.

We fish them with 15's because of the variety that could be caught while trolling from gt's, cuda, spanyards ect. Makes it a bit more fun

Cheers Scottie

well if the fish you hook up

Sat, 2008-06-14 09:09

well if the fish you hook up is decent well then yes a harness and gimbal belt will be a big investment, and a big safety factor, would be nothing worse than hooked up to a fish and have him go deep and the rod loaded up and you slip or lose grip on the rod and the whole thing goes in the drink, if you know what i mean

no harness IMO

Sat, 2008-06-14 10:19

i recomed against a harness untill more experianced. way to easy to loose your footing or get excited and crank that drag and in the drink you go ,would rather have my gear leave the boat than me IMO. it was only 4 weeks ago in exy it happened to some 1 out wide luckily he had a self inflating lifejacket on and was calm and exp enough to back the drag off instead of wasting his time trying to un harness himself. if you are scared bout gear loss use lanyard lines onto the gunnel rails

Certainly if you're going to

Certainly if you're going to use a harness then clip the rod to the harness, and yourself to the deck.

There is nothing wrong with

Sat, 2008-06-14 11:17

There is nothing wrong with using a harness as long as you know how to fish. you can pick up the Okuma harness/gimble belt combo from bcf pretty cheap.
Also the harness isn't really there so your rod doesn't get pulled out of your hands it is there to add comfort make fighting the fish easier.

yeah agree its there for

yeah agree its there for comfort, but i added that it can also be a saftey factor too, good to give your arms and hands a little rest especially with a long fight

harness

Sat, 2008-06-14 11:26

i only want to get one to make the fight more comfortable. Ill also attach the rod to the boat with a rope or something strong so i don't lose it to the sea. Also does the harness make the weight of this fish like spread over your body so you don't get tired as fast.
