Thomascraft 45 opinions

Hi All,

I'm looking at buying a WA built boat, a Thomascraft 45 single engine, to use in Mackay QLD where we get a nasty 2 to 3 metre chop on a regular basis. Has anyone owned a 45 Thomascraft, or been in one, that can give me an opinion of their rough water handling and stability at rest. Thanks

Hi mate
Never owned one but have seen many and been on a few as well (40 and 45ft) -nothing wrong with their sea keeping ability- , the single engined hulls seem to appear "nose down" but i think thats all it is (appearance) your biggest concern is the build, Thomascraft used rent out their moulds so the hull could have been built really well or really poorly - often someone building their own boat is doing so to save money -which is great if they know what they are doing - however scrimp a bit on the layup or quality of materials = fail!

I would get a thorough hull survey -if it passes that i think you will be well pleased with the boat
:-)

cheers
Clint

As Clint has said above, their hulls are pretty nice and they are really nice beamy boats with lots of room,  but, a lot have been fitted out by the owners to save on cash, so you might find a second hand engine in there with high hours or cheap material used in the fitout. Hopefully you find one that has had some time and money put into the fit out.

Great boat but as above. Sadly that also seemed to value them down as people just wern't aware weather it was a second hand engine fit out or totally new. I have only ever been in twins and i live it. My dream boat...

Thanks for the advice. The concept of the large deck space and a single engine to reduce running costs appeals to me. I spoke with the Thomascraft factory who said to make sure the fitout was done properly, they didn't mention that the moulds had been rented out which is quite scary.  The name of the boat I'm looking at is "White Diamond" in case anyone has heard of it, and knows it's build origins ?

Is the boat in Perth?, If so have a run around the boat lifter yards (Hillarys ,Freo ) and chat to the managers they will probably know the boat and know its history.

Look at a AM

I have just sold my AM 43 awesome sea boat with a huge back deck space I had twin cat 3208 fitted in this boat you can also purchase them with a single engine tees boats are WA made there was one for sale at hillarys single engine when I had mine for sale in January.
If is still for sale you would get it for a steal as it is a deceased estate and has a pen at hillarys which you could get good money for the pen.
Look on oceaneer marine web site they had my boat listed with this one they are based at hillarys mariner.

Cheers Colin
