Thinking of going camping/fishing at Coronation Beach the week after Easter - advice needed

I've had a look through some threads on this topic but can't find exactly the info I need.

Basically we're looking at going camping as a family up there the Tuesday after Easter Monday.

As its the family going I need to know a few things as we've not been there before and I've only read abou tHe place in the Guide to Free Camping in the North of WA book (great book btw).

So a few questions:

Youngest is 5, is it suitable for her?

Will it be windy?

Is it mainly camping, fishing or both?

What people does it attract? Will there be other families or idiots tearing round in 4wd?

I know you can camp on the beach, but is there camp spots further back?

According to the book there is a reef with good snorkeling, is this correct?

What is the fishing like straight off the beach?

Sorry for the list, I just needed specific info.

Cheers

Heya

Sat, 2012-03-24 09:52

I am currently living about 10 minutes from Coro so i'll tell you what i know (which isn't much)

Yes it is windy it is predominantly a windsurfing/kitesurfing beach. I have never been down there without seeing at least 3 or 4 and up to 40 sails/kites out at any one time. It is pretty calm most mornings though, the wind picks up in the arvo generally a souwester

At the campsites there are  barbies, little gazebos, shower huts (bring your own water) and toilet huts

Last time I was down there it had a few grey nomads and a few wind surfers. There will usually be a few groups of backpacker/surfers there. Weekends do attract some locals that take the 4wd tracks and camp up the coast a bit.

Fishing wise the best bet would be to take one of the 4wd tracks north or south from the camp and find a nice looking bit of reef some where and have a go. There is definately some good looking fishing spots there. I actually haven't fished it much yet so I can't say exactly but there is a lot of reef just off so i'm sure there would be good fishing.

Straight of the beach at the camp site is usually very weedy which can be quite annoying but you can still catch fish there, the latest tip I got was get up early (beat the windsurfers) go south along the beach a few hundred meters to the first point and cast your slices/poppers at the reef for tailor a friend has had success doing this

So i'm pretty sure your 5 year old will be fine

Also there is a Camp ranger (i guess thats what he is) that lives there so he can help with any questions you have

Hope this helps

Good luck

3. camping, fishing a few windsurfers and kitesurfers too

4. attracts mostly elderly people families some surfer types usualy a calm atmosphere there havnt seen too many idiot there there is a caretaker there and rules about being an idiot.

5 there is a designated camping area all though you can camp on the beach further down not right oin corronation beach though there is a river mouth a couple of km's south of the main camping area which provides great shelter for camping and also great fishing big taylor been coming from there at night lately and a mate caught an 18kg mulloway there not so long ago

6. yes good reef for snorkelling plenty of fishing options but not straight in front of corronations its all shallow reef untill you go north or southnot too far though hope you have a 4wd best fishing is at the river mouths  south or north south is the closest

think its about $5 camping fee in the main area not sure weather you can book or not being easter it will be busy but should have no problem if you want to camp down at the river mouths theres always some sort of room and world class beach fishing alwaysd a chance of a dhu plenty of reef around in close if you look for the spots

coronation

Hey mate,

Corontion is a great place, you'll love it!!

Im there all the time and pretty cofident in saying i've got the place sussed out as far as fishing goes :)

Im actually going camping there with a cousin over easter, for a few days, so might see ya there!

The main campsite is pretty big and plenty of spots around there to camp, although im 99% sure a $5 fee per night is in place, unless you choose to go 4wd up the track and camp at one of the beach spots.

The campsite is packed with foreigners, as its a world class spot for wind/kite surfing.  One day i counted almost 70 windsurfers on the water.

Its pretty much always windy, but that shouldn't stop ya from fishing.

As far as weed goes there is one word - unpredictable.  Sometimes it will be banked  a metre high on the beach and completely gone the next morning.

The toilet facilities are not 5 star at the camp grounds either, but not too bad.

You do get some idiots tearing around in 4wds but not very often as they get busted by the

There is a big reef directly out from the camp grounds, which is exposed on very low tide.  there isn't much life on it either, because there is about 45928 tourists walking over it every day.  A big strip of reef runs all the way along coronation up to Jacksons Hole, some places its 300m out and other places it comes right into the beach.

If you find a clean looking spot (prefferably away from the camp ground) you should do very well on the tailor, herring and occasionaly mulloway.  easter is when the more decent sized tailor and mulloway come through, so your going at the right time :)

hope i helped ya mate, if ya wanted any more info just send us a message!

cheers

Thanks for that Redders, good stuff.

Not sure what we're doing now as we were looking at Sandy Cape, but that's not looking good with the weed and amount of people there.

Whats Coronations like now?

If you PM me your number, I'll give you a buzz if we go up that far, it would be good to meet up.

Cheers mate.
